Foodies enjoy rich Serbian cuisine while on a central European river cruise

Let’s face it–one of the adventures of visiting a foreign country is tasting the local cuisine. If you’re a foodie, then you’ll love a 24-day Bucharest to Amsterdam river cruise and the experience of some of the best dishes in the world! Picturesque cities like Belgrade, Amsterdam, Cologne, Nuremberg and Bratislava pride themselves in their fine cuisine.

Serbia incorporates a lot of foreign influences, including Turkish, Greek, Hungarian and Austrian flavors, into its cooking, which means you’re in for a treat.

In Serbia, you can expect dishes that contain meat. Serbian cuisine may not be for vegetarians.

1) Breakfast
There’s a saying in the US, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” In Serbia, this attitude is also embraced. Breakfast usually includes pastries, breads with jam, butter or lard, cheese, sausage and salami, and milk or kajmak, which is the creamy part off the top of the milk.

2) Lunch
Lunch is the heartiest meal of the day and typically includes three courses. The soups are made with simple ingredients like beef, poultry and noodles and are as filling as they are mouth-watering. Teleća čorba (veal ragout soup) and ljuta krompir čorba (spicy potato soup) are two favorites.

After the soup, a meat dish like slow-roasted lamb, pork or goat follows. For dessert, enjoy a kompot (refreshing fruit-infused drink) or a slice of krempita, custard layered between buttery pastries.

3) Dinner
You’ll probably notice the portions are a bit smaller than lunch. Locals often eat something convenient like a sandwich with pate, meats like blood sausage, or ribs are also popular. If you order a salad, it is served with the main course and not as an appetizer.

For those with a less adventurous palate, don’t worry! There are traditional American options like chicken, steak and vegetarian dishes always available. Remember, this is your vacation!
