Your kids are going to LOVE an Alaskan cruise—whales, sled dogs and bears—oh, my!

Are you thinking about an Alaskan cruise for next summer’s family vacation? Now is the time to book! It’s open season on 2014 Alaska cruises and cruisetours. Let’s get started.

FIRST, pick a family-friendly ship.

Norwegian Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruises and Carnival all cruise to Alaska and provide great programs for kids–from toddlers to teens. The kids are grouped with others in their own age range. Kids usually make new friends on the ship, and parents get to make new friends too—it’s an overall great family experience. Plus, if the kids are having a such great time on the ship, parents have thalaska whale watchinge option of leaving their kids on board under the supervision of its program directors, while they go on shore.

SECOND, determine what your kids want to do.

An Alaska cruise plus a land tour, aka “cruisetour,” makes for one of the most memorable family vacations you will ever experience. And you’ll actually sneak in a little education without them realizing it.

Your kids with light-up with excitement as they see the humpback whale breach the ocean waters for  the first time—and then they will be in awe as they continue to discover more Alaskan marine life. From witnessing icebergs to observing animals in their natural habitat, your kids will not be disappointed. The young son of one of CruiseExperts.com’s  clients said he counted “107 whales!” It has yet to be determined if it was the same whale or group of whales—but either way—he saw 107. There’s no arguing with a young child that can count that high.

Activities that your kids might enjoy while on your Alaskan Cruise:

Siberian husky puppy

  • Mush! Mush! Go on a fun sleigh ride being pulled by a team of Alaskan huskies. Some cruisetours allow you to play with the puppies.
  • Push your adrenaline button and strap on a harness and whizz through the beautiful Alaskan landscape on a zip line.
  • Take a sight-seeing float down the river on a raft. Make paddling a family teamwork test or let the kids take charge while you “relax”.
  • Safaris are not just for African tourists—you can take an Alaskan safari, too. Off-road vehicles take you through the heartland of Alaska, the home of bald eagles, grizzly bears and black bears, dall sheep, caribou, moose and wolf packs.
  • Mix in an aerial tram ride to the top of Mt. Alyeska for a view from the top.
  • Depending on your family’s interests, there’s always plenty of places to go fishing, kayaking or panning for gold.
  • Other places and things to do with your kids while on Alaskan cruises include visiting the Imaginarium Discovery Center in Anchorage, horseback riding in Mt. McKinley, riding a covered wagon in Wrangell-St. Elias, watching the lumberjack show in Ketchikan, or taking your family picture (as a totem pole) among the totem poles at Stanley Park in Vancouver.
