Great places to eat in St. Thomas during your Caribbean cruise

As a part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas gives visitors from the mainland the experience of enjoying a tropical paradise while still feeling close to home. St. Thomas is not only a place to lounge on the beach, but also a premier culinary destination. There are many restaurants spread all over the island that are easily accessible on foot or via taxi.

Dining on St. Thomas is a pretty casual affair, so you don’t need to worry about packing formal attire to take on your cruise. Wherever you go though, you’re in for a treat. At CruiseExperts.com, we put our heads together to find the best restaurants on St. Thomas.

Here are our top picks:

Gladys’ Cafe

Many travelers come home from their Caribbean cruise vacation wondering what Caribbean food is all about. If you make a stop at Gladys’, you won’t have any more questions. Specials from this cozy cafe include conch in butter sauce, jerk pork and pan-fried yellowtail snapper. If you’re in a hurry, be sure to grab some fried plantains to go and a bottle of Gladys’ world-famous hot sauce. And, yes, Gladys is a real person who is happy to chat up patrons any time.

Homemade vinegars and hot sauces are made fresh at Glady’s Cafe.

Oceana

Located in the former Russian Consulate Great House, Oceana offers a hip and stylish dining experience. The street-level portion of the restaurant is a wine bar with a small plates menu designed to pair well with the drink selection. Upstairs is a more formal dining room with candles and oil lamps. While most of its menu items focus on seafood, Oceana also offers an ample selection of beef and lamb dishes as well. Be prepared for all meals to have a Caribbean twist. If you feel a bit underdressed to eat in the formal dining room, the wait staff would be more than happy to serve you at the downstairs wine bar.

Off The Grid

The food truck movement isn’t just limited to the major cities on the mainland. Off The Grid is a mobile restaurant that on most days is parked at the entrance to Sapphire Beach on the east side of the island.

Proprietors Greg and Whitney Engelhardt moved from Los Angeles to the Virgin Islands to pursue their dream of offering the best barbecue experience in the Caribbean. The pair must be doing a good job, as the food truck is currently the top rated St. Thomas restaurant on TripAdvisor.com.

Pie Whole

No matter where you are in the world, sometimes it’s fun to just have a great slice of pizza. Pie Whole does not disappoint! The restaurant’s 13-inch brick oven pizzas are well-known not just in the islands, but in the United States as well. Pie Whole always uses fresh ingredients including spinach, basil and mozzarella and also makes its own pasta. The establishment only has six tables and nine bar stools, so making reservations is a must.
