Royal Caribbean Dress Code UPDATE

Learn about Royal Caribbean’s dress code update before packing for your next trip!

Royal Caribbean Dress CodeDress code is a hot topic when talking about vacation, especially what to wear on a cruise ship. If you have never cruised before, it is understandable to have many questions about attire, swimwear, the right clothing for excursions and more. And, for cruisers who are fans of the Royal Caribbean cruise line, there is a new updated Royal Caribbean dress code you will want to be aware of before your next trip. Here’s a hint – it involves shorts!

For this cruise line, you will want to be aware of their casual, smart casual and formal attire suggestions before you start packing. Here is a quick, updated overview of each:

Happy Traveler Comment
Glynna,Months after our wonderful Alaska cruise of May 2009, I was thinking about you this morning and the great CruiseExperts.com help you provided. Your attention to detail and quick action provided a wonderful, economical upgrade to a veranda room on Holland America's Ryndam! Everything about this trip was truly "first class" - and the nice bottle of California red waiting in our room was a lovely touch. I could not be more pleased with your service. When we contemplate taking another cruise, you will be the first person I contact. — Bob C.
  • Casual – Think jeans, polos, blouses and sundresses. In fact, Royal Caribbean’s dress code most recently dropped shorts from its list of casual attire. Shorts are still allowed however for breakfast and lunch.
  • Smart casual – A step up from “casual,” think dresses, skirts, pantsuits, blouses and collard shirts for this category.
  • Formal nights – Formal nights are always an exciting time aboard a cruise ship. It provides the perfect time to snap memorable photos (and have professional photos sho t onboard). For formal night, consider tuxedos, suits and ties, evening gowns and cocktail dresses.

So, if you have your ticket booked and are still wondering what to wear on a Royal Caribbean cruise, here are a few more tips:

1. Boarding the ship

Keep in mind when you first board the ship, you will not have your luggage with you. It will be dropped off at your stateroom, but this could take hours. Because you will not have your bags right away, bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, or proper dinner attire in your carry-on bag. You will want to start having fun as soon as you get on the ship, and you wouldn’t want the wrong attire to slow you down!

2. Making the most of excursions

These days, excursions details will typically include what type of attire is needed for the trip. It could range from bathing suits and sneakers to heavy jackets and gloves, depending on which part of the world you are traveling. Be sure to pack an extra pair of dry clothes that can be easily carried on your excursion, so you can travel back to the ship in comfort (and in dry clothes!).

3. Don’t skimp on shoes

what to wear on a cruise shipYour shoe selection needs to be carefully planned when deciding what to wear on a cruise ship. You might want to consider flip flops or watershoes for the pool or ocean, heels or dress shoes for formal night, sneakers if you plan on hiking or doing a walking excursion, and several pairs of casual shoes for the rest of your time on the boat.

Some excursions will not let you participate without the proper shoes so pack accordingly (you can typically review available excursions through your cruise line’s website before your trip commences).

4. Think wrinkle resistant

While you will have access to an ironing station aboard the ship if needed, the last thing you will probably want to do is waste precious vacation time ironing. This may be a great opportunity to invest in a few items of wrinkle-resistant clothing that allow you to pack-and-go!

These are just a few tips to help you decide what to wear on a Royal Caribbean cruise.
