Here, you can create your own personal spa, assuming, though,\u00a0that you arrive at Hot Water Beach at the right time of the day. At the beach, deep underwater volcanoes develop reservoirs of heated water. This water makes its way to shore daily one hour before and after low tide. Beachgoers typically dig a hole and relax in the hot water until high tide.<\/p>\n

Karekare<\/strong><\/a>, West Auckland\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you’ve seen the the Academy Award-winning film “The Piano,” then you may already be familiar with this beach. Karekare’s\u00a0black sand that leads to bushy hill make it a very unique destination. Despite its publicity with the film, Karekare\u00a0is generally a quiet beach without too many tourists.<\/p>\n

Piha Beach<\/strong><\/a>, West Auckland\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although it is famously known as the country’s best surfing beach, Piha\u00a0offers plenty for folks who aren’t necessarily interested in hitting the waves. The rugged shore makes the area a great place for light hiking and exploration. If you do choose to take a dip here, be sure to stay in areas that are patrolled by lifeguards, as this area is also known for its rip currents.<\/p>\n

In addition to sunbathing and swimming, you can also hike the area’s well-maintained trails. Be sure to have your camera ready because penguins, seals and dolphins are commonly seen here.<\/p>\n

Mission Bay<\/strong><\/a>, Auckland<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just a few miles away from Auckland’s business district, Mission Bay is the place to go if you want a quick dip, but don’t have much time. On sunny days, you’ll find plenty of beach-goers tossing a Frisbee or taking walks on the grassy areas that border Mission Bay.<\/p>\n

Ninety Mile Beach<\/strong><\/a>, Northland\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

While it’s not actually 90 miles long (it’s closer to 55), Ninety Mile Beach’s beauty is difficult to find anywhere else in the country. The beach’s sand dunes that stretch from\u00a0Kaitaia to the northern tip of New Zealand often remind visitors of a surreal desert landscape.<\/p>\n
