This month we celebrate Patriot Day, observed as the National Day of Service and Remembrance in the United States.\u00a0 We highly recommend a visit to Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Oahu, from one of our popular Hawaiian cruises<\/a>. \u00a0The site\u2014which includes the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Bowfin Submarine and USS Missouri \u201cMighty Mo\u201d Battleship\u2014pays tribute to the 1,777 men who died on Dec. 7, 1941. \u00a0We\u2019ve assembled some great tips to make your visit smooth and memorable.<\/p>\n

Know Before You Go<\/em><\/p>\n

Arriving early to snag tickets for the shuttle boat is the most important thing to know!\u00a0 The tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial are free for the 2,000 first-come, first-served visitors. \u00a0During busy times, tickets may run out before noon. Oahu shore excursions (through your ship) will plan accordingly (and will ensure you have a spot) and so should you if you\u2019re visiting Pearl Harbor on your own. \u00a0You can also try well-in-advance reservations online at www.recreation.gov<\/a> and you may specify your tour time.<\/p>\n

\"Arizona<\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n

Leave your heavy baggage behind. The official site says no purses, handbags, fanny packs, backpacks, camera bags, diaper bags, luggage and anything you carry that conceals belongings. Cameras, cell phones and wallets are welcomed\u2014you just can\u2019t put them into a bag.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t resist sporting that great Hilo Hatties bag, there is a storage facility operated by the memorial for a charge of $3 per bag. Strollers may be parked at the theaters but are not allowed on shuttle boats.<\/p>\n

We know it\u2019s also hard to part with that outrageous tee-shirt you purchased in Waikiki, but remember that Pearl Harbor is a place of honor, respect and quiet reflection.\u00a0 Be mindful with what you choose to wear and how you conduct yourself on site.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no buffet like you\u2019re used to at sea, but the park does have concessions. Outside food and drink is permitted, but only bottled water is allowed on the tour.<\/p>\n

Mind your minutes! If you are one of the lucky to score a ticket, you may have to wait a few hours before your tour even starts (but you\u2019re in Hawaii, so chill). The tour itself runs about 75 minutes and includes a 25-minute film and boat trip to the actual memorial. On the back end, allow ample time for exiting the site, transportation and the ship embarkation process.<\/p>\n
