Day 1 Arrive in Prague, Czech Republic
Greetings from the stunning city of Prague, the Czech Republic’s lively capital. Here you can enjoy an abundance of incredible architecture spanning Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styling. Today is a free day of exploration; you may want to start with a stroll near the Vltava River where you can see numerous spires, domes, cupolas and magnificent structures that decorate the area’s skyline.
Day 2 Prague
Today you can team up with a local guide who will transport you to the beloved treasures of the area. Prague is a 1,200-year-old city with rich history that gives the appearance that time stopped here long ago. It is unique in its own right as many other Central European cities were heavily bombed in the 20th century wars, except for Prague. Landmarks you can explore today include the noted Prague Astronomical Clock, first installed in 1410. This clock is the third of its kind in the world and the oldest one still in working condition!
Next, prepare to visit the Hradcany Castle, an extensive complex that is home to the President of the Czech Republic. Hradcany continues to hold the title of being the largest ancient castle in the world. It measures 570 meters in length by 130 meters wide. Don’t miss the majestic gardens, monastery, and palaces located in the castle complex. Other favorite spots along today’s tour include St. Vitus Cathedral and the Charles Bridge – the oldest bridge in Prague and a great place to catch a local performer. Day 3 Prague-Nuremberg, Germany (Embarkation)
The Secret Romance of Picturesque Prague . The morning is free to explore Prague on your own to enjoy the stunning architectural beauty of the city. You might choose to join a Guided Optional Excursion to reveal the secrets of Prague as your expert local guide takes you to Charles Bridge and Malá Strana—two of Prague’s most romantic and picturesque spots. This afternoon, board your Suite Ship® in Nuremberg and enjoy a dinner on board. (B)
Day 4 Nuremberg – Roth
This morning, it’s all about choice with two fascinating excursions. First, you can choose to join a guided sightseeing tour with a local, certified guide to explore the Nuremberg Rally Grounds. Here you can learn the history and specifics behind the Third Reich, Nazi rallies and more.
Alternatively, you can choose to join in a guided sightseeing tour of the quaint town of Roth. Located just 15.5. miles south of Nuremberg, Roth is a delight for the eyes, with its half-timbered homes and charming market square. You will learn all about Roth’s history in the textile manufacturing industry as you visit the Museum for Industrial Culture. Next, it will be time to visit the noted Schloss Ratibor, an ancient hunting lodge/castle that was crafted in 1535. The detail and design of the lodge is exquisite and visitors can’t get enough of its breathtaking inner courtyard.With so much beauty, history and charm, you will want your camera nearby when you visit this entire region! Day 5 Regensburg
Prepare to get excited as you tour one of Germany’s more visited cities today – Regensburg. Dating back to the time of the Celts around 500 BC, this area is unique because it is considered one of the best preserved medieval cities in the entire region. In fact, Regensburg was the only city not bombed during the battle of WWII. Because of this, the area offers visitors over 1,300 structures of historical significance.
Today you can join in on a guided walk that will transport you to a multitude of architectural highlights. Enjoy the beauty of Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), constructed in the 13th century. Next, explore Porta Pretoria, gates that will lead you to an ancient Roman fort that was built in 179 AD. Stretch your legs as you stroll through the city’s scenic streets and lanes, comprised of high towers, mansions and other extravagant structures – all remnants of wealthy families who enjoyed displaying their affluence in the Middle Ages.
Other popular spots on this walking tour include visiting Stone Bridge which was constructed in the 12th century. In addition, grab a local snack and prized beer at Germany’s oldest restaurant Historische Wurstküche (the Old Sausage Kitchen). This famous eating destination is situated in the heart of a vibrant and energetic area, giving you the opportunity to mingle and chat with locals. Enjoy picturesque views over the river before heading back to your river cruise vessel. There you will enjoy a taste test of Germany’s most famous beers before eating dinner! (B,L,D)
Day 6 Passau
This morning you will find yourself in the scenic town of Passau, a wonderland of cobblestone streets, patrician houses and other elegant structures. Passau is unique in that it is situated at the convergence of the Ilz, Inn and Danube rivers. You can choose to join in an included guided walk today that will take you to numerous area highlights such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral. This breathtaking masterpiece was crafted in Italian-baroque style and holds one of the world’s largest church organs, comprised of almost 18,000 pipes!
If the guided walk through Passau does not interest you today, you will also have the option to choose from optional full-day excursions while your river cruise vessel continues to Austria. Anyone who chooses a full-day excursion will rejoin their vessel in the late afternoon. (B,L,D)
Day 7 Melk, Austria – Vienna
On the eight day of your Avalon river cruise, you will find yourself on an included guided tour of the area’s most exquisite landmark – the 11th century Benedictine Abbey. Still considered one of the largest monasteries in Europe, the Abbey is known for its extravagant library that holds over 80,000 printed books and 2,000 manuscripts. Both architecture and photography buffs will be delighted by the Abbey’s marble statues, frescoed ceiling, altar and 210-foot-high cupola. While at the Abbey, be sure to spend some time on the terrace, as it offers a distinctive and captivating view of the Danube River and countryside – a view you will not want to miss!
Next, it will be time to sail through the mesmerizing scenery of the Wachau Valley, A UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you cruise through this region, you will catch a glimpse of the Stiftskirche, with its famous blue facade and baroque styling. Tonight, you will arrive in Vienna – known as the “City of Music.” Be sure to ask your Cruise Director about scheduling an optional concert and see why this great city fueled the musical genius of Beethoven, Mozart and Strauss!
Day 8 Vienna
Today is a day of exploration around the lively city of Vienna – known for its gilded architecture, rich history and global musical significance. An included city tour and local guide will transport you to top landmarks such as the extravagant Hofburg Imperial Palace, which is home to the renowned Lipizzaner Stallions and Vienna’s Boys’ Choir. From here, you will visit the jaw-dropping St. Stephen’s Cathedral and other noted structures.
While in Vienna, you will not want to miss an opportunity to stop by the Kärntnerstrasse, a pleasant pedestrian marketplace where you can sit, relax and enjoy a piece of Apfelstrudel or Sachertorte. In addition, enjoy the abundance of Vienna’s famed coffee houses that have become a mainstay of the area’s culture and history.

Day 9 Budapest, Hungary
Greetings from the energetic city of Budapest. This capital city has an abundance of history and significant structures for visitors to explore. A guided sightseeing tour is available today and will transport you to landmarks such as Heroes’ Square, the Fisherman’s Bastion, and the notable Matthias Church which was built in the 11th century.
Budapest is the largest city within Hungary and a popular destination for travelers. Here you can shop for the region’s famous Herend Porcelain, handcrafted embroidery and rich cakes and baked goods.
Today’s tour will also bring you to some of the city’s famous bridges, such as Chain bridge which was constructed in 1849 and an important symbol in the city. During your free time today, you may want to explore the Royal Palace Grounds, St. Stephen’s Basilica or the Great Market Hall, filled with over 180 vendors. Last, consider a stroll along the Vaci utca before returning to your Avalon river cruise vessel. (B,L,D)
