Day 1 Arrive in Amsterdam, Holland (Embarkation)

Welcome to beautiful Amsterdam, Holland’s sophisticated, modern capital which has a rich and impressive history. This fascinating 700-year-old city with its elegant and classic architecture, bustling cafés, and popular restaurants presents a distinct ambiance. The narrow streets, town squares, boating canals, and bike paths throughout the city make for a vibrant atmosphere, and with more than 60 museums, it’s no wonder that Amsterdam has the highest museum density in the world. Perhaps you would like to take an optional excursion to Zaanse Schans with its traditional houses and Dutch craft workshops. This afternoon, you’ll board your river cruise ship and meet your friendly crew at a casual evening welcome reception. (Dinner) *NOTE: Flights into Amsterdam must arrive by 2 pm and guests must be onboard the cruise ship by 5 pm.

Day 2 Amsterdam

The experts will tell you, there is no better way to see amazing Amsterdam than by CANAL BOAT, cruising peacefully through the elegant grachten lined with charming homes dating back to Amsterdam’s “Golden Age.” There’s free time for you in the city this afternoon – you might like to join an optional biking tour (weather permitting). Later in the day, you’ll bid tot ziens (farewell) to Holland as your luxury ship cruises peacefully toward Germany. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3 Cologne, Germany

Today, enjoy a peaceful morning of cruising before reaching charming Cologne in the afternoon. One of Germany’s largest cities and capital of the Rhineland, Cologne straddles both sides of the Rhine, and is known for its elegant towering, twin-steepled gothic cathedral. You can choose between an included GUIDED CITY WALK or JEWISH HERITAGE WALK. The historic Old Town abounds with bustling cafés, charming shops, and popular taverns. Be sure to try a Kölsch pale lager, locally brewed in Cologne for more than a hundred years! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4 Koblenz–Rhine Gorge–Rüdesheim

Koblenz is situated where the scenic Rhine and Moselle Rivers, meet. This 2,000-year-old city is the important cultural and business center of the Middle Rhine region. Here, you’ll join a friendly Local Guide for a WALKING TOUR of the city that reveals an eventful past as you stroll through its majestic castles, impressive fortress walls, elegant towers, town squares, and historic monuments. The sensational RHINE GORGE is the most beautiful stretch of river. Here, ancient majestic castles stand sentry on towering cliffs rising 400 feet above the waters. You’ll cruise past the world-renowned rock of the Lorelei, where echoes of enchanted siren song lured unsuspecting sailors to their doom. In beautiful Rüdesheim, the ultimate Rhine Valley wine town, you’ll visit SIEGFRIED’S MECHANICAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM and you’ll see and hear a fascinating collection of self-playing calliopes and music boxes from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. Day 5 Mainz. Excursion to Heidelberg

Mainz is strategically situated at the confluence of the scenic Rhine and Main Rivers.  with “civilized” origins dating back to around 38 BC. Today, this is Germany’s largest and most important wine market. Join your Local Guide for a GUIDED WALK through the historic Altstadt (Old Town) with its many intriguing shops and the fanciful Fastnachtsbrunnen (Carnival Fountain) on the Schillerplatz, a tribute to the jesters at the city’s annual Carnival celebration. Gutenberg, father of modern printing, was born here, and you’ll visit the fascinating GUTENBERG MUSEUM. After a great lunch, you’ll travel to historic Heidelberg, home to the oldest university in Germany. With a friendly LOCAL GUIDE, you’ll visit the impressive ruins of the once majestic HEIDELBERG CASTLE, towering magnificently above the city and is considered among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps. You’ll also see the famous GREAT VAT, the “World’s Largest Wine Barrel.” At nearly 23 feet high and 28 feet wide, the cask holds more than 58,000 gallons of fine wine and even has a dance floor built on top of it! Day 6 Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg, France, situated on the border of France and Germany, blends the cultures of both countries in a delightful way. As capital of the famous Alsace region and seat of the Council of Europe and European Parliament, it is without a doubt an important city that manages to retain its historic charm. On your GUIDED SIGHTSEEING TOUR, visit the enormous red-sandstone GOTHIC CATHEDRAL with its stunning ancient murals, colorful stained-glass windows, and intriguing astronomical clock, as well as the enchanting LA PETITE FRANCE district, home to beautiful half-timber houses, quaint shops, bustling bistros, and an impressive waterfront promenade. You’ll also spend free time exploring historic Place Kléber, a large square in the heart of the city, and fascinating Place Gutenberg in the heart of medieval Strasbourg, which features a stately statue of the inventor of the printing press. Day 7 Breisach, Germany. Excursion to the Black Forest

Breisach, situated at the foot of majestic Kaiserstuhl Mountain on the French-German border. It is known as the gateway to Germany’s iconic BLACK FOREST region, considered an area of incomparable natural beauty. The area got its name because the forests of thick pine trees are so dense that local residents described them as black. Surely the most well known products from this region are Black Forest ham, Black Forest cherry cake, and intricate cuckoo clocks. You may choose to visit the workshop of a local woodcarver who produces fine clocks and other fabulous carvings. Or, you might choose to visit the fascinating open-air Museum of Vogtsbauernhof to see how life was really lived in this area centuries ago. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 8 Basel–Mount Pilatus, Lucerne–Zürich

You’ll disembark your luxurious Avalon cruise ship and join the fabulous Monograms portion of your vacation, where you will travel to charming Lucerne for a special highlight excursion to majestic MOUNT PILATUS. You’ll journey almost 7,000 ft. (2,132m) up for some of the most spectacular views over central Switzerland (in the event of adverse weather conditions, you can enjoy the Swiss Transport Museum instead). Day 9 Zürich–Lake Como, Italy

You’ll travel by HIGH-SPEED TRAIN (first-class) to quaint Como, the city on the lake that bears its name. You’ll enjoy an exciting guided walking tour that includes the charming historic center; the stately Broletto (Town Hall) with its fascinating gothic façade; and the imposing, marble-clad DUOMO, built between the 14th and 18th centuries, and crowned by a high octagonal dome. Day 10 Lake Como

You can experience a peaceful BOAT RIDE ON LAKE COMO and see some of the most stunning panoramas of  mountain scenery and luxury lakeside villas. You’ll disembark at the original Bellagio with its century-old buildings, impressive stone lanes, and quaint cobblestone stairways lined with charming shops, where you will have free time for a great lunch and exploration on your own before returning to charming Como. Day 11 Lake Como

Today, you may choose to travel to fabulous Milan. Take the funicular to the charming residential village of Brunate, located at 2,362 ft. (720m). You can shop for quality silk products; or visit the elegant Volta Temple, dedicated to Como’s native son, Alessandro Volta, famous inventor of the electrical battery.
