Day 1 Arrive in Budapest, Hungary
Greetings from one of the most energetic cities in Europe! Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is a stunning city that is located on the Danube River. Your biggest decision today will be where to explore first, as you have a free day of sightseeing. Experience local cuisine, take in some noted landmarks and enjoy an evening stroll along the banks of the Danube.
Day 2 Budapest
Today is yet another day of excitement as you explore Budapest courtesy of a guided sightseeing tour. This city holds the title as the largest city in Hungary and has multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites in addition to a multitude of treasured landmarks. Some notable spots you will see on today’s tour include Heroes’ Square, which is surrounded by the Palace of Art and the Museum of Fine Art. Next, prepare to visit Matthias Church, constructed in the 11th century, and extensively restored in the 19th century. Architecture buffs will marvel at the structure’s Gothic style.
While on your tour, keep an eye out for some of the area’s eight famous bridges. Two of the most popular in the area include Chain Bridge and Elisabeth Bridge. During some free time in the day, you may want to stop by some local shops to stock up on Budapest’s most famous items – Herend porcelain, cream cakes and embroidered goods. Day 3 Budapest (Embarkation)
If there were any stops you didn’t get to yesterday, now is your chance to explore these areas during some free time this morning. Consider strolling the Royal Palace grounds or stopping by St. Stephen’s Basilica for some unforgettable photography opportunities.

Day 4 Vienna, Austria
Today is a day of rest, relaxation and views unlike any other. As you travel to Vienna along the Danube, you will see impressive scenery from Slovakia located on your right and Hungary located on your left. This 58-mile excursion offers the prime opportunity for photographs and spending a peaceful day with nature.
Tonight, you will arrive in Austria’s capital city, gorgeous Vienna. Commonly referred to as the “City of Music,” ask your Cruise Director about scheduling an optional concert during your time in this city. You will quickly discover why it fueled the musical creativity of greats such as Strauss, Mozart and Beethoven!
Day 5 Vienna
Get ready to explore the incredible city of Vienna with the help of a local guide and city tour. Rich in art and culture, this city is known for its stunning baroque and gilded architecture in addition to numerous landmarks that must be seen by visitors. Some of your memorable stops today include the exquisite Hofburg Palace that houses the renowned Lipizzaner stallions and the noted Vienna Boys’ Choir. Another must see stop, especially for those interested in architecture, design and photography, is the lavish St Stephen’s Cathedral.
Additional time later in the day allows you to relax or take a stroll in the treasured Kärntnerstrasse. This delightful pedestrian marketplace offers guests a chance to shop, sit, people watch and enjoy a piece of Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel. Day 6 Dürnstein, – Melk
Today you will have the opportunity to explore the picturesque town of Dürnstein. Comprised of lush vineyards, hills and forests, all that sit atop the Danube, everywhere you turn looks like a scene off a postcard. Dürnstein is situated in the renowned Wachau wine region and holds just under 1,000 residents. Visitors enjoy visiting this area not only for its landscapes but also its delightful cobblestone streets and charming housing structures in town. Take part in an included walking tour with a local guide who will transport you the location of castle ruins just above town. Here you will learn of the tale of England’s Kind Richard the Lionheart who was prisoner in the castle during the Third Crusade.
At lunchtime, you will board your Avalon river cruise vessel again and set sail through the breathtaking Wachau Valley to Melk. Another guided tour awaits and will whisk you away to the area’s treasured Benedictine Abbey, built in the 11th century. Considered one of the most well-preserved cities north of the Alps, Salzburg is also a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore this area that abundantly displays exquisite baroque architecture, is home to Wolfgang Mozart, and was the setting for the film The Sound of Music. Another option today includes staying aboard your vessel for a relaxing cruise into Passau.
Passau is uniquely located, as it sits at the convergence of the Ilz, Inn and Danube rivers. Visitors to this area thoroughly enjoy its elegance, cobblestone streets and delightful homes. One of Passau’s main landmarks you will see today on your included guided walk of the area is St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Day 8 Regensburg
Regensburg offers so much to those who visit. This incredible city was founded during the Holy Roman Empire and is considered one of the best preserved cities in the region. It is unique in that Regensburg was the only city not bombed and destroyed during WWII. With over 1,300 structures of historical significance in this area, you are sure to be thoroughly entertained and intrigued during your time here.
A variety of architectural landmarks will be yours to explore today during your guided walk. Prepare to visit Porta Pretoria, historic gates that lead to an old Roman fort built in 179 AD, and Altes Rathaus, Old Town Hall. Gaze at exquisite mansions and high towers as you stroll through the city’s breathtaking streets. All of these structures are remnants of well-off families who enjoyed displaying their wealth during the Middle Ages. Take a stroll along Stone Bridge, a beloved treasure in the area and stop by Historische Wurstküche (the Old Sausage Kitchen) for a beer and snack. This 17th century structure is one of Germany’s oldest and most famous restaurants. Mingle with locals and take in the vibrant atmosphere before heading back to your river cruise vessel. Alternatively, you can take a guided sightseeing tour of the charming town of Roth. This Bavarian-styled area is a delight to the eyes with its half-timbered homes and quaint market square area. Roth is a main player in the textile manufacturing industry and you can get a quick overview of its technical, social and cultural history when you visit the Museum for Industrial Culture. Last, enjoy a stop at Schloss Ratibor, a treasured hunting cabin/castle constructed in 1535. Day 10 Nuremberg (Disembarkation) – Prague, Czech Republic
After a delicious breakfast, you will say your goodbyes to your river cruise crew. A motor coach will then transport you to the “Golden City” of Prague this afternoon. (Breakfast)
Day 11 Prague
Today will be an exciting day as you explore Prague, a city that looks as though it was stopped in time. Unique when compared to other nearby capital cities, Prague was not bombed during the 20th century wars. Enjoy multiple adventures when you team up with a local guide and visit the area’s famous Astronomical Clock installed in 1410. This clock is the third of its kind and the oldest one still operating today! Next, stop by Saint Vitus Cathedral and the beloved Hradcany Castle Complex. The complex is home to the President of the Czech Republic and holds the title as the largest ancient castle in the world! It measures an astonishing 130 meter in width by 570 meters in length. While on the castle grounds, take a peek at its gardens, monastery, palaces and more!
