River Cruise Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive in Munich Germany
You’ll transfer to fascinating Salzburg, Austria. Welcome to fabulous Munich, Bavaria’s bustling capital city! This afternoon a comfortable motor coach ride will take you to Salzburg. For any travelers arriving in Salzburg early enough on their own, can take advantage of a guided city walk or a self-guided hike. These options are available in the early afternoon. *NOTE: Flights into Munich must arrive by 12 noon. Transfer to Salzburg departs the meeting point hotel at 2.30 pm).
Day 2 Salzburg. Excursion to the Salzkammergut area
Today you can spend an entire day in fabulous Salzburg doing as you please. Or, you may prefer to join us for the excursion to the impressive Salzkammergut. You’ll need an early morning start, which takes you to this region of natural beauty, where you can choose from a variety of optional excursions such as a cable car ride up to majestic Dachstein mountain where you visit an alluring ice cave, or take a crash course in either archery or mountain climbing. For a more leisurely activity, we suggest a guided walk up beautiful Feuerkogel mountain with a promise of refreshment when you reach the top! during the afternoon CHOOSE YOUR INCLUDED ACTIVITY: You’ll join an easy and relaxing MOUNTAIN HIKE up the fascinating Siriuskogel for a delightful view over the town of Bad Ischl and the picturesque Traun River valley. Enjoy a GUIDED WALK OF Bad Ischl, including an inside visit of the extravagant IMPERIAL VILLA. If you prefer to work off some excess energy, then we have option of canoeing on the river Traun, or guided mountain biking.
Day 3 Salzburg–Linz
After yesterday’s exertions, you have a chance to take it easy this morning. Or, you may wish to join an optional excursion to the source of Salzburg’s beauty and wealth – a visit to a nearby salt mine, or to majestic Hohenwerfen Castle for a guided tour and an entertaining demonstration of falconry. This afternoon a relaxing motor coach ride takes you to charming Linz, with a stop en route in beautiful Mondsee. (Breakfast)
Day 4 Linz (Embarkation)
Linz, Austria’s third-largest city, is considered the European Capital of Culture. You’ll be welcomed with open arms and plenty of exciting things to see and do. This morning CHOOSE YOUR ACTIVITY: You can join a GUIDED CITY WALK or a contemporary HISTORY TOUR during which your guide reveals what life was really like in the city during WWII and how Linz just managed to escape becoming a divided city like Berlin. The more active travelers might enjoy a CASUAL HIKE across to fascinating Mount Pöstlingberg. Then there’s plenty of free time for shopping, exploring on your own, or joining an optional activity. You might even decide on taking a cooking class so you can impress your friends back home with an authentic Linzer Torte, the world’s oldest known cake! Or, you might choose a visit to a farm where you’ll learn how to milk a cow, mow grass using a scythe, saw wood, and more! Day 5 Engelhartszell–Schlögen Oxbow Scenic Cruising–Linz
As you enjoyed a good night’s sleep, your cruise ship arrived in the beautiful market town of Engelhartszell near the German border. You’ll step ashore and CHOOSE YOUR ACTIVITY: you may visit the elegant rococo ENGELSZELL ABBEY to tour its fascinating brewery, explore its SENSORY GARDEN – complete with stone labyrinth, wonderful herb garden, and lush grape vineyard – and attend a TASTING of locally produced cheeses and beer brewed by the Trappist monks. You might choose to join an entertaining GUIDED HIKE along the famous route that smugglers took during World War II, when a tightly controlled border existed between Austria and Germany. When you get back on your cruise ship, an excellent lunch of Bavarian specialties will energize you so your ready to join an exhilarating HIKE ALONG THE LEGENDARY DANUBE RIVER. Day 6 Linz–Mauthausen–Grein–Spitz
You’ll arrive in beautiful Mauthausen this morning, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the historic Neolithic Age. Here, we let you place your own personal stamp on your day as you CHOOSE YOUR ACTIVITY: take a historic GUIDED BIKE TOUR to an ancient Roman border defense fort, which dates back to the 2nd century AD. You’ll visit the museum dedicated to this fascinating site, with military weaponry, personal accounts of daily life, stunning ceiling frescoes, sacred art objects, and more. ACTIVE DISCOVERY ON THE DANUBE CRUISE WLB 9 DAYS FROM LINZ TO BUDAPEST you’ll visit the elegant 9th-century ST. FLORIAN MONASTERY, an architectural rival to charming Melk Abbey.
