Day 1 Arrive in Vienna, Austria (Embarkation)
Welcome to charming Vienna! It’s day 1 of your 12 day Avalon river cruise from Vienna to Wiesbaden 2018. Austria’s capital city is known as the “City of Music” and it’s said that Vienna inspired the creative genius of world-famous composers – Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss. This afternoon, you’ll board your luxurious Avalon river cruise ship and meet your friendly captain and crew at a casual evening welcome reception. Day 2 Vienna
Vienna, once considered the center of the mighty Habsburg Empire, Austria’s enchanting capital city is a fascinating showcase of what is known as gilded architecture. This is home to the extravagant Hofburg Imperial Palace complex with its world-renowned Vienna Boy’s Choir and sensational Lipizzaner stallions; the marvelous neo-renaissance Vienna Opera House; breathtaking St. Stephen’s Cathedral – and many other sights you’ll see on your fascinating GUIDED SIGHTSEEING TOUR. Day 3 Melk-Grein
This morning during your 12 day Avalon river cruise from Vienna to Wiesbaden 2018, you’ll cruise through the sensational Wachau Valley and arrive in charming Melk, where you’ll visit the grandiose 11th-century BENEDICTINE ABBEY, one of Europe’s biggest monasteries, which certainly overshadows the town. This fascinating abbey houses a fabulous library with more than 80,000 printed books and 2,000 manuscripts. The church with its wonderful frescoed ceilings, amazingly high altar, stately marble statues, and 210-foot-high cupola will captivate you. You’ll have time to relax and enjoy yourself onboard your ship while cruising into quaint Grein, a tiny little village, and after an exciting WALKING TOUR, you’ll visit the oldest THEATER in all of Austria. Day 4 Passau, Germany
This morning after a wonderful breakfast, you might enjoy joining an exciting full-day optional excursion to charming Salzburg to visit some of the must-see sites, which were made even more popular by the movie, “The Sound of Music.” You’ll learn how cunning little mice brought about the composition of the famous Silent Night Christmas carol, and you’ll learn how the Austrians really celebrate Christmas. You’ll rejoin your luxurious cruise ship in Passau in the early evening. Or, you can stay onboard ship and relax as you cruise to Passau, situated at the junction of the fabulous Inn, Ilz, and Danube Rivers. This fascinating city is known for its maze of narrow cobblestone streets, lined with magnificent upper-class houses. At this time of year, the Christkindlmarkt Passau’s amazing Christmas market, is set against the elegant backdrop of stunning St. Stephen’s Cathedral, considered a masterpiece of Italian baroque architecture. Day 5 Regensburg
Regensburg is considered one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval cities, dating back to the time of the Celts around 500 BC. Today, Regensburg boasts at least 1,300 listed buildings of “historic interest,” because it was the only German city not decimated by allied bombings during the horrific destruction in other cities during World War II. Architectural highlights included on your exciting GUIDED WALK are the fascinating 13th-century Old Town Hall and imposing Porta Pretoria, gates to an ancient Roman fort constructed in 179 AD. You’ll stroll across the iconic 12th-century Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge), considered the oldest of its kind in all of Germany. You might take a break and enjoy a mug of German beer and also enjoy a delicious SNACK at the popular Historische Wurstküche (Old Sausage Kitchen), one of Germany’s oldest restaurants. During your free time you’ll enjoy exploring on your own, or you might choose to visit the bustling Regensburg Christmas market, including the ones hosted by fascinating Thurn and Taxis Palace. The aromas of mulled wine, sweet toasted almonds, delicious sausages and fantastic gingerbread will create an unforgettable atmosphere, especially when it comes just before dinner. Day 6 Nuremberg
Although 90% of its Old Town suffered extensive damage during WWII, much of it has been restored to the glory it once knew as the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Choose from an included GUIDED SIGHTSEEING TOUR and marvel at the city’s medieval fortifications, elegant gothic churches, and Kaiserburg (Imperial Castle), or join a NUREMBERG RALLY GROUNDS tour. The Old Town is illuminated with festive lights, and the Christmas market is one of the biggest in Germany, featuring 200 stalls selling traditional wares and foods. After your free time at the Christmas market, a shuttle bus service will be at your disposal to take you back to the ship. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 7 Nuremberg. (Disembarkation) Excursion to Munich. (Embarkation)
After a wonderful breakfast, you’ll disembark your luxurious home away from home, which has brought you to historic Nuremberg. You’ll enjoy a relaxing drive to charming Munich, where a friendly local expert will proudly show you all the must-see sights of the fabulous Bavarian capital. You’ll marvel at the inspiring mix of ancient historic buildings and impressive architecture. You’ll visit the amazing Olympic Stadium, a huge 1,000-foot-high Television Tower, fascinating Nymphenburg Palace, charming MARIENPLATZ in the historic heart of the city, with both the historic Old and New Town Halls, and the impressive gothic Frauenkirche. Later in the day, you’ll have more free time to explore in-depth on your own. The classic Christmas market is situated on the Marienplatz, with amazing aromas of freshly toasted almonds, roasted chestnuts, and delicious gingerbread filling the air while the sounds of wonderful alpine Christmas music coming from town hall. You’ll enjoy the nearby Rindermarkt, where you’ll discover the magnificent Kripperlmarkt, one of the largest markets in all of Germany, which specializes in handcrafted mangers and other alluring accessories for your own nativity scenes. And make certain that you don’t leave fascinating Munich without visiting the world-famous Hofbräuhaus to enjoy a great stein of beer! You’ll enjoy a day of relaxation and explore more of Nuremberg at your own pace. Day 9 Bamberg
In the early morning hours, you’ll arrive in charming medieval Bamberg, known as the former elegant residence of one of Germany’s most dominant imperial dynasties, and today is an amazing UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your captivating GUIDED WALKING TOUR takes in Bamberg’s historic center, including the elegant 13th-century Romanesque cathedral and the impressive Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) – constructed on an island – believe it or not – in the middle of the beautiful Regnitz River because the local bishop refused to give the village residents land for a town hall! This holiday time of year, you’ll marvel at a community that is elaborately decorated just for Christmas.
