Day 1 Arrive in Zürich, Switzerland. Transfer to Basel (Embarkation)
Greetings from stunning Switzerland, home of popular tourist destinations such as the Swiss Alps and Rhine Falls! Today you will board a motor coach and be transferred to Basel where you will find your docked Avalon river cruise vessel.

Day 2 Strasbourg, France
Today you will have a chance to explore one of the most distinctive cities in all of France…breathtaking Strasbourg. Located on a fine line with France and Germany, Strasbourg displays its medieval past and enlightened future all at once for visitors and residents. This city is capital of the Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine region and is home to a multitude of important institutions such as The Council of Europe, The International Institute of Human Rights, the European Parliament, and Eurocorps. Visitors to this area often fall in love with the city’s La Petite France district, home to winding alleyways, unique half-timbered homes, charming boutiques, taverns and markets along the waterfront.
A walking tour today will transport you to a variety of the area’s top landmarks such as the impressive Strasbourg Cathedral. The Cathedral is known for its remarkable stained-glass, Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and astronomical clock. Next, spend time strolling around Place Kléber, a celebrated square in the city, and Place Strasbourg, which pays homage to the inventor of the printing press.

Day 3 Excursion to Heidelberg, Germany
Begin your day with a morning of rest and relaxation. Take this time to rejuvenate before heading out to see the seductive town of Heidelberg. This town, considered to be the fifth largest in the region, is famous for housing Germany’s oldest university (constructed in 1386!). A must-see during your time here is the Heidelberg Castle and its impressive ruins. This castle is assessed as one of the most important Renaissance structures still in existence north of the Alps. Photography lovers will want to have a camera on hand as the castle’s stunning architecture and rich history paints a perfect photo opportunity!
After your trip to the Castle, stop by the beloved “Great Vat.” Famous for being the world’s largest wine barrel, this epic structure stores almost 60,000 gallons of wine and measures 23 feet in height by 28 feet in width. Impressively, this barrel even has a built in dance floor located on its top. Day 4 Mainz – Rüdesheim
Welcome to the breathtaking city of Mainz on the fourth day of your Avalon river cruise vacation. Originally founded as a military post and fort city by the Romans, the city of Mainz now serves as the largest and most vital wine market in all of Germany and is officially called “Germany’s Wine Capital.” A guided walk awaits you today and you will be transported to the renowned Gutenberg Museum. This structure is considered one of the world’s oldest museums focused on printing. Here you can witness an original Gutenberg Bible and a plethora of printed books originating from the 15th century and later. Last, stop by the restored Altstadt (the Old Town) during your time in this city to browse traditional wine bars and numerous unique shops for trinkets and souvenirs.
Once lunchtime is near, you will board your vessel and cruise into stunning Rüdesheim. This picture-perfect Rhine Valley wine town has multiple must-see destinations that shouldn’t be missed. For music lovers, spend time at Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum to explore one of the world’s largest collections of self-playing music boxes and calliopes. Next, prepare yourself for a special treat (sorry, we can’t give it away!). Afterwards, relish in some free time to explore Drosselgasse at your own pace. This energetic cobblestoned street is stocked with bars, shops, open-air wine gardens, live performances, and a chance to to pick up one-of-a-kind treasures for loved ones back home. Day 5 Rhine Gorge – Koblenz
If scenic postcard-like beauty is what you are seeking on your Avalon river cruise, you will surely find it today. Prepare to experience one of the grandest and most striking attractions in the world – the Rhine Gorge. Considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rhine Gorge is made up of cliffs that rise over 400 feet above the water, many of which are lined with elegant castles and structures. As you cruise through this seductive area, you will pass the legendary Lorelei Rock. Listen closely to the area’s legend of a beautiful woman who bewitched men and lured them to their death.
As your Rhine Gorge experience concludes, you will find yourself at the convergence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, called the German Corner. Don’t miss the imposing equestrian statue of German Emperor William I located here.
Once in the city of Koblenz, two invigorating tours are available to choose from. First, a walking tour of Koblenz is on deck. A truly celebrated region, you will be hypnotized as you stroll through this 2,000-year-old city containing towers, castles, fortresses, market squares and multiple historically significant structures. Alternatively, consider touring the Sayn Manor House. Day 6 Cologne
Prepare for a day of the adventure in the vibrant city of Cologne. Considered the fourth largest city in Germany, Cologne uniquely sits on both sides of the Rhine River. One of its most famous and popular landmarks is the gothic Kölner Dom (the Cologne Cathedral). Two included excursions are available to choose from during your time here today.
First, consider taking joining in a guided city walk where you can enjoy distinctive architecture, scenery and learn an abundance of historical facts from the area. Alternatively, join the Jewish Heritage Walk. On this tour, you can learn the history behind the long-standing Jewish community in Cologne that ultimately expired in the Holocaust but is now over 5,000 strong.
As the day advances, it is time to take pleasure in some free time. Relax and rejuvenate or continue on with your explorations – the choice is all yours! For history aficionados, stop by the Romano-Germanic Museum to see distinctive Roman settlement artifacts. The nearby Museum Ludwig is a must-see for art lovers. Here you will see one of the largest Picasso collections in addition to an extensive collection of Europe’s modern art. Before your time in this captivating city concludes, take a stroll through Old Town for a snack and some shopping. Sample some of the area’s esteemed beers and chat it up with the locals! Day 7 Amsterdam, Holland
Greetings from the intoxicating city of Amsterdam, a city with a unique history! This stunning area was once a small fishing village and is now the capital city of the Netherlands and considered to be one of the most innovative cities in the world. Visitors are often enchanted with the region’s energetic atmosphere, stunning architectural landmarks, boutiques, restaurants and long list of things to do while here.
Today you will have a chance to see Amsterdam through a unique perspective – via Canal Boat. Considered to be the best way to explore the area, get ready for a close up view of incredible houses and architecture as you cruise through the Grachtengorgel. Also known as the “Amsterdam Canal District,” the Grachtengorgel, showcases exquisite structures crafted during the Dutch Golden Age.

Day 8 Amsterdam & Paris, France
On the eighth day of your vacation, you will disembark your Avalon river cruise vessel to head towards your next adventure. And included transfer will whisk you away to Paris, France via a high-speed first-class train. This will kick-off the Monograms portion of your journey. Prepare for three exciting overnights in the “City of Lights” before heading to London. (Breakfast)
Day 9 Paris, France
This morning is sure to be filled with magic as you travel to the renowned Notre Dame Cathedral via a guided sightseeing tour. This medieval Catholic Cathedral is world-famous for its French Gothic styling, stained glass, sculptures, multitude of bells, and organ. Learn a multitude of historical facts while in the Cathedral such as Napoleon being crown emperor in 1804.
While in this vivacious city, pass the famed Arc de Triomphe and scope out a variety of stunning bridges as you pass the Seine River. Visitors to Paris often enjoy strolling the Avenue des Champs-Elysées. Considered to be one of the most recognized and visited avenues in the world, Champs-Elysées is lined with grand buildings, gardens, fountains, luxury shops, cafes, cinemas and more.
No trip to Paris would be complete without a stop at the legendary Eiffel Tower and a stroll around The Louvre. Day 11 Paris, France & London, England
Today your time in Paris will conclude and you will travel via a high-speed Eurostar Train to the jolly city of London, England. (Breakfast)
Day 12 London
With so many sites to see on today’s agenda, be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring your camera! A morning guided sightseeing tour will transport you to all of the area’s famed landmarks. Prepare to set your sights on Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Piccadilly Circus and famed Downing Street.
This vibrant capital city is the most populated city in the region and is considered a leading area in the arts, healthcare, fashion, entertainment, media and finance. Part of today’s adventures include visiting St. Paul’s Cathedral (not open on Sundays), constructed in breathtaking English Baroque styling and said to be one of London’s most recognized sights. Other hotspots traveled to today include London’s eye, a.k.a. the enormous ferris wheel on the south bank of the River Thames, and The Shard, famous for being the tallest building in Western Europe.
