Enjoy some of Europe’s treasured spots during your 14 day Avalon river cruise from Cote d’Azur to London 2017. Your European river cruise adventure begins with an exciting overnight on the world-famous French Riviera – the incomparable Côte d’Azur. You’ll travel to charming Arles in the Provence region, where you’ll board your luxurious Avalon Waterways cruise ship and set sail into the tranquil Camargue area (daylight permitting). You’ll enjoy expert guided sightseeing in Arles, fascinating Avignon, and Lyon, France’s culinary capital. You’ll also have guided walks in charming Viviers, medieval Tournon, and historic Vienne; cheese tasting in wonderful Chalon-sur-Saône; and a visit of the impressive Hôtel-Dieu in beautiful Beaune. Climb aboard the high-speed TGV train from quaint Dijon to bustling Paris, where you’ll spend two exciting overnights. Day 1 Arrive in Côte d’Azur, France

Welcome to France! Located between the mountains and the deep-blue Mediterranean Sea, the Côte d’Azur is synonymous with prestige and beauty – with its captivating yachts, gorgeous villas, and famous events. Free leisure time will allow you to get better acquainted with this incredible place.

Day 2 Côte d’Azur–Arles (Embarkation)

This morning, enjoy your free time to explore or join an exciting optional excursion. In the early afternoon, transfer by motor coach to Arles in the Provence region, where you’ll board your stunning river cruise ship. Before dinner, meet your crew at a casual welcome reception, then sail toward the mouth of the Rhône and experience the awesome tranquil vistas of Camargue National Park (daylight permitting). Day 3 Arles

In Arles, capital of the Provence, join your Local Guide for a GUIDED CITY TOUR with an expert on the city. Visit the historic church of St. Trophime, dating from the 12th century, and visit the spacious ROMAN AMPHITHEATER. Still used today, the amphitheater dates to the 1st century, and was built to hold crowds of more than 20,000 spectators. World-renowned 19th century artist, Vincent Van Gogh was inspired by the special light of the Provence and spent a very productive year in Arles. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4 Avignon

During the night, set sail for Avignon, where you arrive during a wonderful breakfast. During your GUIDED TOUR you may choose to join an included visit of the PALACE OF THE POPES, built in the 14th century as the sovereign popes’ residence. It is the largest gothic fortress in the world, with a vast living space equivalent to four gothic cathedrals. You may opt for only city sightseeing and more free time to explore on your own. Or, be adventuresome and join an optional outing to Pont du Gard or to the famous wine cellars of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5 Cruising–Viviers

A leisurely morning on board your ship is an opportunity to relax and enjoy the beautiful passing landscapes. After lunch, join your LOCAL GUIDE for a stroll around the enchanting town of Viviers, which developed around its ROMANESQUE CATHEDRAL. The OLD TOWN has an attractive mix of Christian, Roman, and medieval influences. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 6 Tournon/Tain l’Hermitage–Vienne

The twin cities of Tournon and Tain l’Hermitage lie nestled among grape vineyards farmed for centuries between the Rhône River and the granite slopes of the Hermitage. Enjoy a GUIDED WALK of Tournon, one of France’s oldest medieval cities, with its grandiose 16th-century castle and Roman ruins. You will arrive in Vienne in the late afternoon – one of the oldest towns in the region; a GUIDED WALK is a great way to see this quaint little town surrounded by steep hills. Explore the town center to see the Roman Theater, which once held 13,000 spectators, and the Augustus and Livia Temple, constructed around 20 BC and converted into a church in the Middle Ages. Day 7 Lyon

Lyon is France’s third-largest city and its culinary capital. Founded by the Romans in 43 BC, the city’s prosperity dates back to the 16th century. It was extremely successful in commercial, industrial, and banking activities. You can also enjoy Roman remains, many excellent museums, and extravagant renaissance architecture that have delighted visitors for centuries. You are joined by a LOCAL GUIDE as you survey the city from Fourvière Hill and explore the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its maze of medieval alleyways. You can visit Place des Terreaux, a popular area with bustling cafés, monuments, and the famous fountain often depicted on postcards. Be sure to enjoy the wine of the region – Beaujolais. Day 8 Cruising–Chalon-sur-Saône

Enjoy a leisurely day today – your final day on board ship. If you prefer to stay busy, you have your choice of optional excursions, including a visit to a wine cellar. While sailing to Chalon-sur-Saône, enjoy an onboard CHEESE TASTING, some of the finest France has to offer. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 9 Chalon-sur-Saône (Disembarkation)–Beaune–Dijon–Paris

After breakfast, head by motor coach to Beaune, the unofficial capital of the Côte d’Or area and Burgundy’s wine capital. Although life here centers around wine, Beaune offers much more with its ramparts, medieval houses, cobblestone streets, and historical monuments. You can also visit the HÔTEL-DIEU charity hospital. Built in 1443, this facility was paid for by the chancellor of Burgundy after the Hundred Years’ War left many of the town’s population destitute. Today it houses Van der Weyden’s painting of The Last Judgment and is one of France’s architectural must-sees. After lunch, continue to Dijon, where you board the high-speed TGV to Paris, the “City of Light.” (Breakfast)

Day 10 Paris

Known as one of the world’s most romantic and active cities, Paris is certainly a delight for all your senses. Your included CITY SIGHTSEEING shows you magnificent must-see sights, including Notre Dame Cathedral, the unique Louvre Museum with its glass pyramid as a contrast to its ancient architecture, the commemorative Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel Tower. Or, you may choose to join a GUIDED WALK through historic Île St. Louis with its narrow one-way streets and Île de la Cité, the center of Paris where the medieval city was founded and home to the stunning NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL. In your free time, take a leisurely stroll down the Champs-Elysées with its posh cafés, or perhaps visit the world-famous Louvre or Montmartre with its gleaming white Sacré Coeur Basilica and the cluster of artists on Place du Tertre. The excitement doesn’t stop there. Paris is also well known for its colorful and exhilarating nightlife that includes some of the world’s most famous cabaret shows. All of this awaits your discovery! Day 11 Paris-London, England

This morning your included transfer to the train station sees you join the Monograms segment of your vacation. Travel to London, England by the HIGH-SPEED EUROSTAR TRAIN. Your Local Hosts also will be available to help you make the most of your free time. (Breakfast)

Day 12 London

Morning guided sightseeing includes all of London’s famous landmarks. Drive past the Houses of Parliament and historic Big Ben; Westminster Abbey, where Prince William and Kate Middleton were married; Whitehall’s mounted horseguards; the Prime Minister’s Downing Street; and Piccadilly Circus. Take photos of the London Eye, the giant Ferris wheel on the riverbank, and the Shard, the tallest building in Western Europe. Then, visit beautiful ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL (except on Sundays). Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece with its world-famous dome is an iconic feature of London’s skyline. The spectacular interior of the cathedral holds awe-inspiring stories about its history. The final highlight of the day is the ceremonial pageantry of the Changing of the Guard (if held). (Breakfast)

Day 13 London

Your Local Hosts will help you make the most of your final full day on your memorable vacation. You could take a ride on the gigantic London Eye, which will provide fantastic views high above London, or visit Windsor Castle for a tour of the magnificent State Apartments – one of the official residences of Queen Elizabeth II. In the evening, see one of the dozens of celebrated West End shows, or enjoy dinner at a traditional London pub, followed by a relaxing night-time cruise on the tranquil Thames River. There are so many possibilities to make your brief stay in England unforgettable. (Breakfast)

Day 14 London
