River Cruise Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive in Amsterdam, Holland (Embarkation)
Greetings from the energetic and unique city of Amsterdam! Famous for its intricate canal systems and bike paths, this capital city of the Netherlands had humble beginnings as a small fishing village in the 12th century. Today, Amsterdam is considered to be one of the most innovative and revolutionary cities in the world. The area is known for its abundance of museums – more than 60 around the city – which exhibit works from renowned artists such as Van Gogh and Rembrandt.
Spend your time this morning exploring the city’s architectural landmarks, boutiques, and restaurants or take an optional excursion to visit Zaanse Schans. During this tour, you will visit the area’s beloved housing structures and notable Dutch craft workshop. This afternoon, it will be time to board your Avalon river cruise vessel. Day 2 Amsterdam
It is no secret – one of the best ways to travel around Amsterdam and see the sights is via the city’s elaborate canal system. Today you will take a Canal Boat tour and have the opportunity to witness the area’s exquisite housing structures and seductive architecture as you travel through the Grachtengorgel – also called the Amsterdam Canal District.
After your tour, spend some free time as you wish browsing the city for trinkets, souvenirs or some local fare. Later today, it will be time to say farewell to beautiful Amsterdam and cruise towards Germany. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 3 Cologne, Germany
This morning, enjoy a peaceful cruising experience where you can catch up on your rest or a good book. You will soon arrive in the breathtaking city of Cologne. The fourth largest city in Germany, Cologne is uniquely situated on both sides of the Rhine River. One of the area’s most famous historical landmarks is its gothic-styled Kölner Dom (the Cologne Cathedral).
During your time in this city, choose from two exciting and educational excursions. First, join a guided city walk where you will have an opportunity to see unique architecture, landscapes and learn historical facts about the area. Alternatively, you can join the Jewish Heritage Walk and become educated on the area’s Jewish history, its destruction during the Holocaust and how it has successfully rebuilt itself.

Day 4 Koblenz – Rhine Gorge – Rüdesheim
Begin your day in the mesmerizing 2,000-year-old city of Koblenz. Comprised of countless Castles, towers, fortresses, market centers and historical landmarks, it uniquely sits at the convergence of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers. This city is considered to be the cultural and business epicenter of the Middle Rhine region. Be sure to join the local guide today for a walking tour that will transport you to some of the area’s most popular destinations.
Next, prepare to cruise through one of the most beloved areas in the world – the Rhine Gorge. This incredible stretch of river is as scenic as it is seductive. It contains bewitching cliffs that rise over 400 feet above the waters and which are lined with extravagant castles and structures. During this time, you will hear the legend behind the infamous Lorelei Rock and the beautiful women who would lure sailors in this area to their death.
Last, your excitement-filed day concludes with some time spent in Rüdesheim. This stunning wine town is home to many historical landmarks. Here you can witness one of the world’s largest collections of self-playing music boxes and calliopes in all shapes and sizes. Day 5 Mainz. Excursion to Heidelberg
The important city of Mainz will be yours to explore on the fifth day of your river cruise adventure. Originally founded as a military post and fort city by the Romans, this area is now considered to be the most vital wine market in Germany. Your time here begins with a guided sightseeing walk through the area’s Altstadt or Old Town. Here you will find countless boutiques and vendors, plus the famed Carnival Fountain.
Once lunch has concluded, it will be time to join an excursion to Heidelberg. Famous for being home to Germany’s oldest university (constructed in 1386), this city also houses the renowned Heidelberg Castle. Your local guide will transport you to see the impressive ruins of this structure, said to be one of the most vital Renaissance structures still remaining north of the Alps. Day 6 Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg is the capital of the Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine region and home to countless vital institutions including The Council of Europe, The International Institute of Human Rights, the European Parliament, and Eurocorps.
During your time here, a guided sightseeing tour will transport you to one of the area’s beloved destinations, the renowned Strasbourg Cathedral. Located on the French-German border at the foot of breathtaking Kaiserstuhl Mountain, this area is the connection to the Black Forest region, famous for its unparalleled beauty and appeal. Comprised of thick pine trees and alluring forests, the area was cleverly titled the Black Forest because of the trees appearance and thickness giving it a black impression to nearby residents. Day 8 Basel, Switzerland (Disembarkation) – Beaune, France – Chalon-sur-Saône (Embarkation) – Tournus
Once breakfast has concluded this morning, it will be time to say farewell to your Avalon vessel’s crew. After disembarking from your ship, you will head for Beaune just over the border as you cross into France. Located between Geneva and Paris, Beaune is considered to be the wine capital in this area. The town is completely surrounded by some of the most popular wine villages in the world, and it owes the majority of its financial livelihood to making and selling wines.
Two exquisite excursions are available to choose from today. First, architectural enthusiasts will delight in an included guided excursion to the Hotel-Dieu de Beaune Charity Hospital.
