Day 1 Bucharest, Romania
Arrive at the busy Bucharest airport and transfer to the superior first-class Radisson Blu Hotel Bucharest (or similar) in the heart of the city for a 1-night stay. Spend the rest of the day relaxing, or do some exploring of the city on your own.
Day 2 Bucharest, Romania
After a wonderful breakfast, check out of your hotel and take a morning tour of this amazing city. See the elegant Patriarchal Church, the striking Palace of Parliament and the historic Arch of Triumph. You then proceed to Giurgiu where you board your ship and enjoy a casual welcome dinner. Day 3 Veliko Tarnovo & Arbanasi, Bulgaria
After a wonderful breakfast, disembark at beautiful Russe for a full-day excursion to Bulgaria’s former capital, Veliko Tarnovo. There you will see impressive Tsaravets Hill and the historic ruins of the royal castle. During your free time, shop for local crafts along the bustling Samovodska Charshia. Continue your adventure to charming Arbanasi for lunch in a popular local restaurant and a guided tour of the splendid Nativity Church with its intricate floor-to-ceiling murals and icons. Day 4 Vidin & Belogradchik, Bulgaria
Arrive in the charming Bulgarian port of Vidin, and take an excursion to see the majestic Belogradchik Fortress, built right into the astonishing Belogradchik Rocks. See the fortress’s amazing construction, begun in Roman times and greatly extended by Bulgarian tsars and the Ottomans, and enjoy many sensational views. Enjoy a great lunch aboard your ship, and then you’ll have free time to explore Vidin’s festive city center, elegant Orthodox churches and the ruins of the city’s once-grandiose synagogue. Day 5 Iron Gate, Serbia/Romania
Today, enjoy scenic cruising as you travel through one of the most charming areas of the Lower Danube. The Iron Gate is one of Europe’s most breathtaking natural wonders, a spectacular narrow gorge with huge white limestone cliffs. Day 6 Belgrade, Serbia
Wake up in the Serbian capital city of Belgrade. Take a guided walk through the remarkable grounds of Kalemegdan Fortress, now a stately park; also see the outstanding Orthodox cathedral and stop at the historic Square of the Republic. Enjoy a great lunch aboard your ship before you’re free to explore Belgrade’s impressive architecture or visit one of its many museums – like the Nikola Tesla Museum. Dine aboard your ship or experience some of Belgrade’s festive nightlife. Your ship departs very late this evening. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 7 Osijek, Croatia
Cruise along the Danube, arriving in charming Vukovar around noon. Disembark for an exciting afternoon excursion to the historic Croatian city of Osijek. Inhabited since Neolithic times, this area has had several heydays under the Romans, the Ottomans and the Hapsburgs. These days, however, Vukovar is admired for its baroque buildings, parks and monuments. Return aboard ship for a relaxing evening dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 8 Kalocsa, Hungary
Sail into Hungary this morning, arriving at beautiful Kalocsa after lunch. Take a guided city tour including a visit to the elegant Archbishop’s Palace. Then, you are treated to an exciting performance of traditional Puszta horsemanship. Return to your cruise ship and enjoy a festive final onboard dinner as we depart for Budapest, Hungary. Day 9 Budapest, Hungary
You’ll arrive in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Situated along the Danube, it combines the once separate towns of hilly Buda and cosmopolitan Pest into a city rich with history. Your guided tour gives you a taste of both sides, starting with Pest’s National Opera House and historic Heroes’ Square. In Buda, you’ll walk along impressive Castle Hill to Fishermen’s Bastion and visit elegant Matthias Church. Take some free time to explore more of this fascinating city before returning aboard your ship to enjoy a traditional Hungarian dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 10 Budapest, Hungary
Today is yours to explore Budapest completely on your own. Visit one of several fascinating museums, or do some souvenir shopping, ride the innovative and efficient metro, relax in one of the Art Nouveau spas, or see the Great Synagogue and Jewish Quarter. As always, your Program Director can help you choose sightseeing opportunities to get the most out of your free time. Day 11 Vienna, Austria
Enjoy a day of cruising the scenic and beautiful Danube River toward your destination of Vienna, the capital city of Austria and called the “City of Music,” which inspired the creative genius of Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss. You’ll be arriving early this evening. After dinner, relax or enjoy an optional classical concert – a fitting offering for the City of Music.” (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 12 Vienna, Austria
Today we tour the Austrian capital of Vienna. Ride along the Ringstrasse, which replaced the city walls in the mid-19th century. See some of the city’s baroque architecture, including the world-famous Vienna Opera House, elegant St. Stephan’s Cathedral and impressive Hofburg Palace. Return to your ship for lunch. The rest of the day is yours to further explore. As always, your Program Director can share suggestions on numerous sightseeing opportunities for you to get the most out of your free time. Or you may choose to take an optional tour to elegant Schönbrunn Palace, called the “Versailles of Vienna,” erected in 1778 and graced by a number of outstanding formal gardens, Grecian statuary, the world’s oldest zoo and historic Roman ruins. Day 13 Melk, Austria
Today, visit the stately abbey at Melk, a 900-year-old Benedictine monastery featuring Austria’s finest Italian baroque architecture. The abbey houses an extravagant library with more than 80,000 printed books and 2,000 manuscripts. You’ll be captivated by the splendor of the church with its sensational frescoed ceilings, stunningly high altar, marble statues, and 210-foot-high cupola. You’ll rejoin your ship and cruise through a wonderful dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 14 Passau, Germany
Arrive this morning in Passau, ideally located at the junction of the Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers. Your guided walk along this charming town’s narrow streets takes you through Old Town and past traditional patrician houses. You’ll see the elegant New Bishop’s Residence and visit the extravagant baroque St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its ornate interior. Inside, you are treated to a special concert played on the 17,774-pipe organ, considered to be Europe’s largest church organ. Enjoy a great lunch aboard your ship, and then you can return to the city for further exploration and adventure on your own before departing for an all-night cruise. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 15 Regensburg, Germany
After a wonderful breakfast you arrive in the historic city of Regensburg, dating back to the time of the Celts around 500 BC. Tour this wonderfully preserved medieval city, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes structures from Roman times. Discover many 13th- and 14th-century patrician houses and see the splendid St. Peter’s Cathedral. During free time, visit the popular Alte Würstküche (Old Sausage Kitchen), Germany’s oldest restaurant. Enjoy cruising through dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 16 Nuremberg, Germany
During our morning cruise, you may choose to attend a noteworthy presentation about the European Union. Then in the late morning you’ll arrive in historic Nuremberg; after lunch, disembark for a tour. Visit the ruins of Zeppelin Field, the expansive Nazi parade grounds of the 1930s, and see the impressive Palace of Justice, site of the infamous Nuremberg Trials. See Nuremberg’s Old Town area as you walk past the fascinating Albrecht Dürer House and bustling Main Market Square. You can spend more time exploring Nuremberg on your own, or join an optional World War II tour that includes the illuminating Documentation Center. Day 17 Bamberg, Germany
Enjoy a fascinating tour of Bamberg, with its bustling medieval city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your walking tour includes a visit to the elegant 11th-century cathedral, refurbished in late Romanesque style in the 13th century, and the charming city hall built on a tiny island in the middle of the Regnitz River when the Catholic bishop refused to give the townspeople land for the building. Take some free time to enjoy Bamberg and perhaps try some of the town’s distinctive smoke-flavored beer before returning to your ship. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 18 Würzburg, Germany
After a wonderful breakfast, tour the elegant Würzburg’s Bishops’ Residenz, one of Germany’s largest and most baroque palaces and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then enjoy an onboard lunch or join an optional journey along Germany’s fascinating “Romantic Road” to Rothenburg, which features a mighty turreted city wall and impressive Gothic and baroque architecture. Day 19 Wertheim, Germany
Welcome to Wertheim, located at the junction of the beautiful Main and Tauber Rivers. During your morning walking tour, experience life in a typical small German village. Stop in a bakery and a butcher shop, and learn about Wertheim’s glassblowing tradition. Enjoy your free time to explore before returning to your cruise ship for lunch. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 20 Koblenz, Germany & Middle Rhine
Today, you’ll cruise past stately hilltop castles along the Rhine River. This particularly stunning stretch of the river is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We pass the famous Lorelei Rock, which marks the river’s narrowest point; the rock is named after a legendary Rhine Maiden who lured unsuspecting sailors to their demise. This afternoon, we’ll stop to visit majestic Marksburg Castle, the only Rhine fortress never destroyed by wars or invaders. Rejoin your ship in Koblenz and dine onboard. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 21 Cologne, Germany
You’ll arrive in Cologne during breakfast, then disembark for a tour of Germany’s fourth largest city. Wander through fascinating Old Town past elegant St. Martin’s Church and visit the Dom, Germany’s largest cathedral, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend your free time enjoying Cologne’s barometrical waterfront before returning aboard for dinner and an evening departure. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 22 Kinderdijk, The Netherlands
We sail along the Rhine during the morning hours, enjoying scenic views. Spend your morning enjoying some popular Dutch diversions: sample Dutch cheeses and jenever, a distilled juniper liquor, and try your hand at sjoelen (Dutch table shuffleboard). After lunch, your ship arrives in picturesque Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for an afternoon tour of this ingenious network of windmills and other fascinating flood management devices. You’ll learn why the windmills were built and see how they work. As a bonus, you’ll enter a working windmill for a tour of its mechanisms and quaint living quarters.
