River Cruise Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive in Vienna, Austria (Embarkation)
Welcome to the beautiful city of Vienna, Austria’s dynamic capital, known as the “City of Music” and which is said to have inspired the creative genius of three world-famous musician/composers – Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss. This afternoon, you’ll board your luxurious Avalon river cruise ship and meet your friendly captain and crew at a casual welcome reception. (Dinner)
Day 2 Melk–Dürnstein
Today is dedicated to the sensational and romantic Wachau Valley, where so much of Austrian’s excellent wine grapes are grown and fine wines produced. You’ll visit the magnificent 11th-century BENEDICTINE ABBEY, which towers high above the town of Melk. This fascinating abbey houses an incredible library with more than 80,000 printed books and 2,000 historic manuscripts. The splendor of the abbey is difficult to express in words, with its fabulous frescoed ceilings, stunningly high altar, stately marble statues, and a towering 210-foot-high cupola. The breathtaking panoramic view from the terrace of the abbey over the Danube and surrounding countryside is awe-inspiring! After visiting charming Melk, you’ll lounge on the wonderful Sky Deck with a glass of white wine while enjoying the amazing scenic beauty as your ship cruises peacefully to quaint Dürnstein, best recognized by its baroque blue and white Stiftskirche standing right on the river bank. The main street of this tiny village – with a population of less than 1,000 people – is lined with majestic 16th-century residences and charming narrow cobblestone streets. You’ll explore on your own, or you might choose one of the popular optional excursions. If you are fit and fancy some healthy exercise, perhaps a biking excursion (weather permitting) will fit you best! Situated high above town are the ancient ruins of the once majestic castle where England’s King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192. Day 3 Bratislava, Slovakia

At lunchtime, you’ll arrive in beautiful Bratislava, the vibrant capital of Slovakia situated at the foothills of the rugged Carpathian Mountains. You’ll join your friendly Local Guide for an exciting tour of this fabulous city, including a splendid GUIDED WALK of its fascinating Old Town, where winding narrow cobblestone streets and alleyways twist and turn to eventually reveal the historic Town Hall, one of the oldest stone buildings in the city. Also you’ll marvel at the elegant gothic ST. MARTIN’S CATHEDRAL, coronation church for the Kingdom of Hungary from the 16th to 19th centuries. You are free for the rest of the afternoon to explore this fascinating city on your own. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 4 Budapest, Hungary (Disembarkation)
