Day 1 Arrive in Frankfurt, Germany (Embarkation)
Welcome to Germany! This afternoon, you’ll board your luxurious Avalon cruise ship and meet your friendly crew at a casual evening welcome reception before sailing out of Frankfurt. (Dinner) *NOTE: Flights into Frankfurt must arrive by 3.30 pm. Guests must be on board ship by 5 pm.
Day 2 Heidelberg–Mannheim
You’ll take an excursion to beautiful Heidelberg this morning, where you’ll visit the oldest university still operating in Germany. You’ll visit the majestic Heidelburg Castle that towers over the city and is considered one of the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps. You’ll see the world’s largest wine barrel, the “Great Vat.” It’s nearly 23 feet high and 28 feet wide and holds 58,000 gallons of fine German wine. It also has a dance floor built on the top to bring life to this festive holiday season. In December, there is an ice skating rink set up near the castle and vendors are offering Glühwein, Bratwurst, and other delicious treats. The Christmas Markets are scattered over five town squares. The Markets provide a wonderful shopping experience filled with a wide variety of fine crafts and regional delicacies. Day 3 Strasbourg, France
Bustling Strasbourg, which sits on the border of Germany and France, is the perfect blend of cultures from both countries. It is the capital of the Alsace region and is an important city that reflects old world charm. A GUIDED WALKING TOUR will reveal ultimate Europe as you visit an elegant Gothic Cathedral made from red sandstone and featuring a gorgeous astronomical clock, beautiful murals and stained glass windows. You’ll visit La Petite France district with its impressive half-timbered homes, quaint shops, alluring bistros and a busy waterfront promenade. You can spend time exploring the large historic square, Place Kléber. in the heart of the city and fascinating Place Gutenberg in the heart of medieval Strasbourg. There you’ll find a statue of the famous inventor of the printing press. The traditional Christmas market dates back to 1570 and is one of the oldest in Europe. Its primary focus is a gigantic Christmas tree, located at Place Gutenberg. You’ll stroll the narrow cobblestone streets and take in the enticing aromas of mulled wine, sweets and spice cakes and biscuits. Guaranteed to be a magical experience. Day 4 Breisach, Germany. Excursion to the Black Forest
Beautiful Breisbach is the gateway to Germany’s world-famous Black Forest, a region of exceptional beauty with its natural forest of thick pines. It is located at the foot of the majestic Kaiserstuhl Mountains on the French-German border. This area was named so because the forests were so thick and dense that local residents would describe the trees as black. The region is most known for its famous Black Forest ham, cherry cake, and beautiful cuckoo clocks. You’ll spend your afternoon free time visiting one last Christmas market, or opt for an exciting excursion to quaint Colmar in France’s Alsace region. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
