Day 1 Arles, France (Embarkation)
Welcome to France! This afternoon, you’ll board your luxurious Avalon Waterways river cruise ship, which is docked in charming Arles, in the picturesque Provence region. Before a wonderful dinner, you’ll meet your friendly crew at a casual welcome reception, then set sail toward the mouth of the beautiful Rhône for a taste of the peaceful vistas of sensational Camargue National Park (daylight permitting). Day 2 Arles
In charming Arles, capital of the picturesque Provence region, you’ll join your friendly Local Guide for an exciting GUIDED CITY TOUR. You’ll marvel at the stunning church of St. Trophime, dating from the 12th century, and visit the ancient ROMAN AMPHITHEATER. Still used today, the amphitheater dates to the 1st century, and was built to hold more than 20,000 spectators. World famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh, was inspired by the special light of the Provence and spent a very productive year in Arles. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 3 Avignon (Embarkation)
On your exciting GUIDED TOUR, you may choose to join an included visit of the sensational PALACE OF THE POPES, constructed in the 14th century as the sovereign popes’ stunning residence. With a gigantic living space equivalent to four gothic cathedrals, it is the largest gothic fortress in the world. Or, you may choose for only city sightseeing and more free time to explore on your own, or you could choose to join an optional outing to impressive Pont du Gard or to the world-famous wine cellars of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Day 4 Cruising–Viviers
Enjoy a relaxing morning onboard your luxurious river cruise ship to kick back and and enjoy the picturesque scenery you sail past. After a wonderful lunch, you’ll join your friendly LOCAL GUIDE for a stroll around the charming town of Viviers, which developed around its elegant ROMANESQUE CATHEDRAL. The historic OLD TOWN is said to have an appealing mix of Christian, Roman, and medieval influences. A great place to explore during this first half of your European river cruise. Day 5 Tournon/Tain l’Hermitage–Vienne
The charming twin cities of Tournon and Tain l’Hermitage lie nestled among lush green wine grape vineyards between the beautiful Rhône River and the rugged granite slopes of the Hermitage. You’ll enjoy a fascinating GUIDED WALK of charming Tournon, one of France’s oldest medieval cities, with its majestic 16th-century castle and ancient Roman ruins. You’ll arrive in quaint Vienne in the late afternoon, and an incredible GUIDED WALK introduces you to this charming little town surrounded by steep hills – one of the oldest towns in the region. You’ll explore the bustling town center to see the ancient Roman Theater, which once held 13,000 spectators, and the elegant Augustus and Livia Temple, built around 20 BC and converted into a fascinating church during the Middle Ages. Day 6 Lyon
LyoHistoric Lyon is France’s third-largest city and its culinary capital. Founded by the ancient Romans in 43 BC, the city’s economic prosperity dates back to the 16th century and is due to extremely successful commercial, industrial, and banking activities. Ancient Roman remains, numerous world-class museums, and a lot of renaissance architecture will delight you. You’ll be joined by a friendly LOCAL GUIDE as you survey the city from high atop Fourvière Hill and explore the quaint Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its maze of narrow medieval alleyways and impressive Place des Terreaux, a popular area with bustling cafés, stately monuments, and the famous fountain often depicted on postcards. Before you leave this wonderful city to head back to the rest of your Avalon river cruise voyage, please be sure to sample Beaujolais, the famous wine of the region. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 7 Cruising–St. Jean de Losne
You’ll enjoy a leisurely day cruising as your final day onboard your French river cruise.
