Day 1 Arrive in Zürich, Switzerland. Transfer to Basel (Embarkation)
Greetings from breathtaking Switzerland! Home to beloved tourist destinations such as the Rhine Falls, Swiss Alps, and the Chateau de Chillon, Switzerland is known for its enchanting and hypnotic scenery and varied climate. Today you will board a motor coach and be transported to Basel where your docked river cruise vessel is waiting. Before dinner, enjoy a festive meet and greet with your vessel’s crew.

Day 2 Strasbourg, France
Today you will have the opportunity to explore one of the most unique cities in all of France…Strasbourg. Situated on a fine line with France and Germany, Strasbourg continues to display its medieval past and enlightened future all at once. This city is capital of the Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine region and is home to a plethora of important institutions including: The Council of Europe, The International Institute of Human Rights, the European Parliament, and Eurocorps. Visitors to this area can’t take their eyes off of the city’s winding alleyways that are comprised of unique half-timbered homes, taverns and markets.
A walking tour will transport you to a variety of must-see landmarks such as the impressive Strasbourg Cathedral, known for its exquisite stained-glass, Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and astronomical clock. Next, spend time strolling through Place Kléber, an extensive and celebrated square, and Place Strasbourg, which pays homage to the inventor of the printing press.

Day 3 Heidelberg, Germany
A relaxing morning awaits you today before you head out to explore the seductive town of Heidelberg. The fifth largest town in its region, Heidelberg is home to the oldest university in Germany which was constructed in 1386. While you are here, don’t miss the number one landmark, Heidelberg Castle. This castle, considered the most significant Renaissance structure north of the Alps, offers visitors a rich history and stunning architecture – so be sure to have your camera handy. From here, you will get an up-close view of the treasured Great Vat. Known for being the world’s largest wine barrel, this enormous structure can hold almost 60,000 gallons of wine and measures 23 feet in height by 28 feet in width. Believe it or not, this barrel even has a built in dance floor located on its top! Day 4 Mainz – Rüdesheim
Welcome to the breathtaking city of Mainz, originally a military post and fort city founded by the Romans. Today, the city serves as the largest and most critical wine market in all of Germany. A guided walk of the area will transport you to the renowned Gutenberg Museum, considered one of the oldest museums revolving around printing in the world. Here you can see an original Gutenberg Bible and a multitude of printed books originating from the 15th century and later. Stop by the Altstadt (the Old Town) where you can browse numerous unique shops for trinkets and souvenirs.
During the early afternoon, you will return to your Avalon river cruise vessel for lunch and a scenic cruise into stunning Rüdesheim. This picturesque Rhine Valley wine town has multiple landmarks that can’t be missed. Spend some time at Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum, where you can explore one of the world’s largest collections of self-playing music boxes and calliopes. Next, prepare yourself for a special treat (sorry, it’s a secret!), and then relish in some free time to explore Drosselgasse. This vibrant cobblestoned street is full of bars, shops and attractions such as open-air wine gardens, live performances, and a chance to pick up one-of-a-kind knick-knacks. Day 5 Rhine Gorge – Koblenz
On the fifth day of your European river cruise, it will be time to experience one of the most majestic and scenic areas in the world – the Rhine Gorge. Considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rhine Gorge is comprised of cliffs that sit over 400 feet above the water, many of which are home to ancient castles and structures. During your cruise through this beloved area, you will pass by the legendary Lorelei Rock and here the legend of a beautiful woman who bewitched men and lured them to their death in this area.
As your Rhine Gorge experience comes to an end, you will find yourself at the convergence of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers, also known as the German Corner. Here, keep an eye out for an extravagant equestrian statue of German Emperor William I.
Next, an exciting walk tour of Koblenz awaits you. A truly celebrated region, you will be enchanted as you stroll through this 2,000-year-old city that is comprised of towers, castles, fortresses, squares and numerous structures of historical significance. Alternatively consider visiting the Sayn Manor House, a medieval castle house constructed in the 14th century which combines New Gothic and Baroque architecture. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 6 Cologne
Enjoy an action-packed day in the energetic city of Cologne. The fourth largest city in Germany is uniquely situated on both sides of the Rhine River and its most famous landmark is the gothic Kölner Dom (the Cologne Cathedral). Two included excursions are available for your enjoyment today. First, consider taking part in a guided city walk where you can enjoy distinctive architecture, scenery and historical facts. Alternatively, join the Jewish Heritage Walk, where you can learn the history behind the long-standing Jewish community in Cologne that ultimately perished in the Holocaust but is now over 5,000 strong.
As the day progresses, it is time to relish in some free time that can be used however you wish. For history aficionados, consider stopping by the Romano-Germanic Museum filled with Roman settlement artifacts. The Museum Ludwig is a must-see for art lovers. Here you can find one of the largest Picasso collections in addition to an extensive collection of Europe’s modern art. Last, take a stroll through Old Town for a snack and some shopping. Day 7 Amsterdam, Holland
Greetings from the fascinating and intoxicating city of Amsterdam! Originally constructed as a small fishing village in the 12th century, Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands and considered one of the most innovative and sophisticated cities in the world (with the awards to prove it!). Visitors can’t get enough of the area’s vibrant atmosphere, and abundance of restaurants, shops, and stunning architectural landmarks. Today you will experience Amsterdam in the best way possible, via Canal Boat. This mode of transportation gives you a unique perspective of the area’s extravagant housing structures and architecture as you cruise through the Grachtengorgel – the Amsterdam Canal District. Most of the structures seen here were crafted during the Dutch Golden Age and represent an assortment of facades and architectural styles.
