Begin your excursion in Nuremberg, Germany where you can visit this thousand-year-old city with a tour guide before boarding your river cruise ship. Your next stop, Regensburg, the only city left standing during the bombings of WWII. There are many listed buildings of historic quality and significance for the architectural admirers to enjoy, including Port Pretoria, the gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD. Here, you’ll visit one of Germany’s oldest restaurants where you will get a chance to taste some of Germany’s finest local sausages and be introduced to the country’s famous beers. Day 1 Nuremberg, Germany (Embarkation)
Today you will board your river cruise vessel during the afternoon hours. Once you are settled in, you will enjoy a lively meet and greet reception with your crew before dinner. (Dinner)
Day 2 Nuremberg – Roth
On the second day of your European river cruise you have a variety of certified sightseeing guide opportunities to choose from. Consider taking a specialized tour of the famous Nuremberg Rally Grounds or a guided tour of the delightful town of Roth, just 15.5 miles south of Nuremberg. If you choose the latter, expect to browse through popular areas of the town, made up of half-timbered homes, a charming market square and beautiful scenery. Roth is a main player in the textile industry and no trip to the town would be complete without visiting the Museum for Industrial Culture. Here you will explore the technical, cultural and social history of the area. Next, prepare to visit Schloss Ratibor, a historic hunting lodge built in 1535. Day 3 Regensburg
Imagine exploring one of Germany’s most popular cities, also noted for being one of the most well preserved locations in the region. Well, today you will have the opportunity to visit and enjoy this city – the city of Regensburg. Regensburg has a unique history, as it was the only location not bombed during the battle of WWII. With more than 1,300 historically significant structures in this area, you will have no shortage of cultural and fascinating places to explore.
Once you arrive in Regensburg, enjoy a guided walk that takes you to numerous architectural treasures such as the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), which was constructed in the 13th century. Next, it will be time to explore Porta Pretoria, the gates that lead to an ancient Roman Fort from 179 AD. Many visitors on this tour especially love the opportunity to wander through the city’s exquisite streets that are lined with numerous mansions and high towers. All of these structures are remnants of very wealthy families who enjoyed displaying their wealth during the Middle Ages.
On your tour, you can cross over the Stone Bridge, built in the 12th century and the oldest of its kind in the area. Before heading back to your cruise vessel, be sure to take a stroll along the river or grab a snack at the Historische Wurstküche, also known as the Old Sausage Kitchen. This is one of the Germany’s oldest and most adored restaurants. Regensburg is known for its lively atmosphere and terrific scenery, offering visitors delights for all the senses. Day 4 Passau
Today’s adventure begins as you dock in Passau, uniquely located on the convergence of the Ilz, Inn and Danube Rivers. The breathtaking scenery in this area is made up of delightful, narrow cobblestone streets and patrician homes. One of the main attractions in Passau is St. Stephen’s Cathedral, an Italian baroque architectural masterpiece. The Cathedral houses one of the largest organs in the world that is crafted of 17,774 pipes! A guided walking tour will take you one numerous highlights in the area. For those who prefer full-day excursion options, several choices will be available while your river cruise vessel sails on towards Austria. Day 5 Melk, Austria-Vienna
This morning kicks off with a distinctive exploration opportunity – a guided sightseeing tour of Melk’s renowned 11th century Benedictine Abbey. Still considered one of the largest monasteries in Europe, the Abbey contains over 80,000 printed books, 2,000 manuscripts, countless marble statues, massive frescoed ceilings, and a 210-foot-high cupola. The structure is truly a photographer’s dream come true – so be sure to bring along your camera. In addition, visitors can’t get enough of the impressive views of the Danube that can be seen from the Abbey’s terrace.
Next, prepare to cruise through the beloved Wachau Valley that offers visitors picturesque, unique views. This area is officially a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will pass by the famous Stiftskirche with its remarkable baroque style and blue facade, the town of Durnstein, and soon after arrive in Vienna. Once in the “City of Music,” you can take in an optional nighttime concert and get a taste of this inspirational city that fueled the talent of Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss. Day 6 Vienna
On the sixth day of your Avalon river cruise, you can explore the lively city of Vienna, known for its rich history, gilded architecture and famed coffee houses. A local guide will show you many of the city’s top sights including the extravagant Homburg Imperial Palace, (think Lipizzaner Stallions and the Vienna Boys’ Choir), the Vienna Opera House, and the jaw-dropping St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
While in this city, be sure to explore the Kärntnerstrasse, a deligtful pedestrian marketplace where you can sit, relax and enjoy a piece of Apfelstrudel or Sachertorte. With an assortment of cultural locations, impressive scenery and deep history, you are sure have a memorable time in Vienna. During the late afternoon, it will be time to head towards Budapest. Day 7 Budapest, Hungary
Budapest has a reputation for being one of Europe’s most energetic cities. Today, your guided sightseeing tour will transport you to popular tourist sites such as the 11th century Matthias Church, Heroes’ Square, and near some of the city’s eight notable bridges. This region is famous for its handcrafted embroidery, porcelain, and rich pastries and baked goods. You might want to browse around the Great Market Hall where you can find over 180 vendors selling everything from paprika to cake.
