Day 2 Mâcon
Wine and Cheese on the Stunning Saône. Enjoy leisurely cruising en route to Mâcon along the majestic Saône River. Consider a Guided Optional Excursion to a Chardonnay wine cellar, or to the Castle of Cormatin. DISCOVERY Later, enjoy a delicious Cheese Tasting on board your ship. Day 3 Lyon
You’ll enjoy some time to relax onboard your comfortable cruise ship before arriving in beautiful Lyon, France’s third-largest city and its culinary capital. Founded by the anicient Romans in 43 BC, the city’s prosperity dates back to the 16th century and is due to successful commercial, industrial, and banking activities. Ancient Roman remains, excellent museums, and fantastic renaissance architecture delight travelers. A knowledgeable LOCAL GUIDE joins you as you survey the city from Fourvière Hill and explore the Old Town with its maze of historic medieval alleyways, and impressive Place des Terreaux, a popular area with festive cafés, historic monuments, and the famous fountain often depicted on postcards. Day 4 Lyon
You’ll enjoy a free day in this amazing city to explore all that it has to offer at leisure. Early risers might enjoy visiting the local produce market. Perhaps stroll through one of Lyon’s fabulous parks, discover some of the amazing murals (there are over 100), or select one of the available optional excursions. Be sure to taste the wonderful culinary delights and sample Beaujolais, the popular wine of the region; wine connoisseurs know that the very best grapes must be hand picked. Day 5 Tournon/Tain l’Hermitage–Viviers
The twin cities of Tournon and Tain l’Hermitage lie nestled among grape vineyards farmed for centuries between the Rhône River and the granite slopes of the Hermitage. Enjoy a GUIDED WALK of Tournon, one of France’s oldest medieval cities, with its grandiose 16th-century castle and Roman ruins. You will arrive in Vienne in the late afternoon – one of the oldest towns in the region; a GUIDED WALK is a great way to see this quaint little town surrounded by steep hills. Explore the town center to see the Roman Theater, which once held 13,000 spectators, and the Augustus and Livia Temple, constructed around 20 BC and converted into a church in the Middle Ages. Day 6 Avignon
The fortified city of Avignon is the beautiful capital of the Vaucluse region, the most sensational part of Provence with its intact ramparts encircling the entire city, narrow cobblestone streets and historic squares, and fabulous private mansions built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Known as the “City of Popes,” it was the dynamic center of the Catholic Church in the 14th century. During your GUIDED TOUR you may choose to join an included visit of the stunning PALACE OF THE POPES, built in the 14th century as the sovereign popes’ personal residence. Make sure to take a photo of the famous Pont Saint Bénezet (Saint Bénezet Bridge), from the popular song Sur le Pont d’Avignon. Day 7 Arles
You’ll marvel at charming Arles, located on the northern tip of the Camargue and the bustling capital of the Provence region, your LOCAL GUIDE will show you highlights of the city and you’ll visit the ancient ROMAN AMPHITHEATER. Still used today, it dates to the 1st century and was constructed to hold more than 20,000 spectators. This evening, you’ll sail toward the mouth of the mighty Rhône for a taste of the peaceful vistas of fabulous Camargue National Park (daylight permitting). (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
