River Cruise Itinerary
Day 1 Budapest, Hungary
Welcome to Budapest, the bustling capital city of Hungary. Transfer to your cruise ship from the airport. After boarding, the afternoon is yours to just relax or do a bit of exploring. If your arrival schedule permits, you may join an organized walk to Budapest’s famous covered market – established in 1897 – in the three-story Great Market Hall. You’ll return to your ship to enjoy a fantastic traditional Hungarian dinner. (Dinner)
Day 2 Budapest, Hungary
Today we visit Budapest and enjoy the highlights of the once separate town of Buda and Pest. You’ll marvel at the features of the hilly Buda and cosmopolitan Pest sides of the city, First we’ll see Pest’s National Opera House and the historic Heroes’ Square. In Buda, you’ll walk along impressive Castle Hill to Fishermen’s Bastion and elegant Matthias Church. While you enjoy a great lunch aboard your ship, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore this vibrant city on your own. You may choose to visit the refreshing Art Nouveau Gellért Spa, or one of the many other plush facilities in this “City of Healing Waters.” You’ll return to your cruise ship to enjoy a fantastic dinner and an evening departure. Day 3 Bratislava, Slovakia
You’ll arrive in charming Bratislava this afternoon and embark on an exciting walking tour of Slovakia’s capital city, known for its long and fascinating history. Bratislava is the only national capital that borders two other countries – Austria and Hungary. Visit attractions like the ancient medieval Town Hall complex and rugged fortifications at Michael’s Tower, the ornate Jesuit Church and elegant Gothic St. Martin’s Cathedral. You’ll pass by several Hapsburg-era ornate palaces before returning to your ship. You can relax this evening or take a walk before our late departure. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 4 Vienna, Austria
Today we tour the Austrian capital of Vienna, the fascinating “City of Music,” and the place that inspired the creative genius of Strauss, Mozart, and Beethoven. Take a ride along the Ringstrasse, which replaced the city walls in the mid-19th century. Marvel at some of the city’s baroque architecture, including the world-famous Vienna Opera House, and awe-inspiring St. Stephan’s Cathedral.. You’ll return to your ship for lunch, but the rest of the afternoon is yours to further explore many of the must-see sights in this exciting city. Vienna is home to the posh Hofburg Imperial Palace complex with its world-famous Vienna Boy’s Choir and dazzling Lipizzaner stallions – plus, countless other amazing sights. As always, your Program Director can recommend numerous fascinating places to visit during your free time. Or you may take an optional tour to Schönbrunn Palace, the “Versailles of Vienna,” erected in 1778 and boasts a number of extremely beautiful formal gardens, fabulous Grecian statuary, the world’s oldest zoo and historic Roman ruins. After dinner just relax onboard or enjoy an optional classical concert – a fitting end to a fantastic day in the “City of Music.” (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 5 Dürnstein & Melk, Austria
This morning, we dock at the charming Wachau Valley town of Dürnstein, where you can sightsee and explore on your own, or you can take an optional stroll with your Program Director to see the highlights of this quaint town. After lunch aboard your ship, visit the impressive 900-year-old abbey at Melk, a Benedictine monastery that began as a castle of Leopold II. Marvel at its spectacular wall and ceiling frescoes; checkout the library’s comprehensive collection of medieval manuscripts; and admire the craftsmanship in the stunning spiral staircase. You’ll rejoin your ship and cruise through a great dinner onboard. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 6 Linz, Austria & Ceský Krumlov, Czech Republic
Arrive this morning in Linz, Austria’s third-largest city and a crucial river port where culture plays an important role in everyday life. You’ll enjoy an all-day excursion to the beautiful Bohemian village of Ceský Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ride through the beautiful Czech countryside and take a walking tour featuring the charming historic center of the city with many baroque and Renaissance buildings, dating back hundreds of years. You have some free time to enjoy Krumlov’s quaint streets, filled with bustling cafés, alluring shops, amazing galleries and festive pubs. You may choose to stop for lunch in one of the many fine local restaurants available to you. Return aboard ship for a wonderful dinner and a late-evening departure. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Day 7 Passau, Germany
Arrive this morning in Passau, situated where the Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers meet. Your guided walk along the town’s narrow streets takes you through Old Town and past traditional patrician houses. You’ll see the elegant New Bishop’s Residence and enjoy the beauty of St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its baroque interior. Inside, you are treated to a special concert played on Europe’s largest church organ with 17,774 pipes. Enjoy an onboard lunch, but you still have time to return to the city for further exploration on your own before dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 8 Passau, Germany
After breakfast, disembark and head to the Munich airport for your return flight home. Or, you might choose to extend your vacation with 3 additional nights in the breathtaking Czech capital of Prague. (Breakfast)
