River Cruise Itinerary
Day 1 Nuremberg, Germany
Welcome to bustling Nuremberg, Bavaria’s second largest city. You’ll transfer from the airport to your cruise ship. After boarding, you have free time to get some exercise and explore this fascinating city on your own. (Dinner)
Day 2 Main–Danube Canal & Nuremberg, Germany
Your morning begins with a fascinating tour of Nuremberg, which includes the extensive ruins of Zeppelin Field, the expansive Nazi parade grounds of the 1930s, and the stately Palace of Justice, the revered remnant of the Nuremberg Trials. You have a brief stop at the main courthouse before walking from the impressive imperial palace grounds, past the popular Albrecht Dürer House and on to the bustling Main Market Square of Old Town, enclosed within ancient city walls.
Day 3 Regensburg, Germany
Your visit to the scenic town of Regensburg begins when you meet your guide dockside for a walking tour through what is considered one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities. You’ll observe one of the largest groupings north of the Alps of elegant church spires, towers and charming patrician houses from the 13th- and 14th-century. You also marvel at the 12th-century Old Stone Bridge, elegant St. Peter’s Cathedral and a number of picturesque courtyards. Take time to walk the streets of the city to see the sights, or take this opportunity to do some serious shopping. As always, your Program Director can share suggestions that will help you make the most of your free time.
Day 4 Passau, Germany
You arrive this morning in beautiful Passau, at the junction of the Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers. Your guided walk through the town’s narrow streets takes you to Old Town and past traditional patrician houses. You’ll see the elegant New Bishop’s Residence and visit the awe-inspiring baroque St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its beautiful interior. Inside the cathedral, you are treated to a special concert played on the 17,774-pipe organ, considered Europe’s largest church organ.† Enjoy a great lunch aboard your ship, and then return to the city for further exploration on your own before departing for a wonderful night of cruising. Day 5 Krems & Vienna, Austria
This morning you’ll cruise leisurely through the awe-inspiring Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can taste some local Austrian specialties as you see attractive riverside towns and castle ruins along the river. After a great lunch, explore the long-established town of Krems and see the elegant Steiner Tor, the last remaining city gate. Visit fascinating Göttweig, a working Benedictine abbey that owns and farms many of the vineyards along the Danube. The magnificent ceiling fresco in the imperial stairwell is considered one of the largest in the world. Visit the church, which is a masterpiece of baroque architecture. You’ll rejoin your ship and continue cruising through the sensational Wachau Valley. Arrive in beautiful Vienna after dinner and enjoy a relaxing evening on the ship, or you may choose to attend an optional concert, a fitting event for the “City of Waltzes.” (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 6 Vienna, Austria
Today we tour the Austrian capital of Vienna, the “City of Music.” Ride along the fascinating Ringstrasse, which replaced the city walls in the mid-19th century. You’ll marvel at some of the city’s baroque architecture, including the world-famous Opera House, the elegant St. Stephan’s Cathedral and majestic Hofburg Palace. You return to your ship for a great lunch. The rest of the day is yours to further explore this marvelous city. As always, your Program Director can share suggestions to help you make the most of your free time. Or you may choose to take an optional tour to impressive Schönbrunn Palace, the “Versailles of Vienna,” erected in 1778 and surrounded by a number of formal gardens, fine Grecian statuary, the world’s oldest zoo and ancient Roman ruins. You’ll have dinner served aboard ship. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 7 Budapest, Hungary
Your cruise ship will arrive in bustling Budapest, Hungary’s vibrant capital divided by the fabulous Danube River. Take a panoramic city tour through the more modern Pest side of the city. Journey along impressive Andrássy Avenue and see the 19th- and 20th-century mansions, the elegant National Opera House, stately Parliament Building and impressive Chain Bridge. Take some special time when you visit Heroes’ Square to learn about Hungarian history, then cross the Danube to Buda’s majestic Castle District. Walk up the hill to Fishermen’s Bastion and magnificent Matthias Church; enjoy breathtaking views of the city below. You’ll return to your ship for a great lunch and the rest of the day is yours to explore both sides of the city. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 8 Budapest, Hungary
After a wonderful breakfast, you’ll disembark and ride to the airport for your return flight home. Or, you may choose to extend your fabulous journey with 2 additional exciting nights in Budapest, giving yourself more time to visit the must-see sights you may have missed in this bustling Hungarian capital.
