Welcome to charming Vienna, Austria’s capital city known as the “City of Music,” which is said to have inspired the creative genius of world-renowned composers Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss. This afternoon, you’ll board your luxurious Avalon cruise ship and meet your friendly captain and crew at a casual evening welcome reception. Day 2 Vienna
Vienna was once the center of the mighty Habsburg Empire. Day 3 Melk-Grein
Get your camera ready! This morning you’ll enjoy some fabulous scenery as you cruise through the sensational Wachau Valley and arrive in charming Melk, where the stunning 11th-century BENEDICTINE ABBEY, one of Europe’s biggest monasteries, which dominates the town and boasts an baroque library with more than 80,000 printed books and 2,000 historic manuscripts. You’ll be awe-inspired by the elegance of the church with its amazing frescoed ceilings. You’ll have time to relax and just enjoy cruising onboard your luxurious ship while sailing into quaint Grein, a fascinating little village, and after an impressive WALKING TOUR, you’ll get to visit the oldest THEATER of Austria. Day 4 Passau, Germany
After a wonderful breakfast this morning, you may choose to join an optional full-day excursion to bustling Salzburg to see some of the world-famous Sound of Music sites. You’ll discover how mice actually caused the composition of the famous Silent Night carol, and learn how Austrians traditionally celebrate Christmas. You’ll rejoin your cruise ship in beautiful Passau in the early evening, or you may stay onboard and relax as you cruise to Passau, located where the beautiful Inn, Ilz, and Danube Rivers meet. Charming Passau is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, lined with amazing patrician houses, and at this time of year, the fascinating Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) is set up against the magnificent backdrop of elegant St. Stephen’s Cathedral, considered a masterpiece of fine Italian baroque architecture. Day 5 Regensburg
Regensburg, which dates back to the time of the ancient Celts around 500 BC, is said to be one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval cities. It was the only German city not bombed by the allies during chaotic WWII. Today, Regensburg has at least 1,300 buildings listed as being of “historic interest.” Some of the architectural highlights included on your exciting GUIDED WALK are the historic 13th-century Old Town Hall and stunning Porta Pretoria, gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD. You’ll stroll across the iconic 12th-century Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge), the oldest of its kind in all of Germany. You might choose to enjoy a popular German beer and an included SNACK at the world-famous Historische Wurstküche (Old Sausage Kitchen), one of Germany’s oldest restaurants. During your free time you’ll have opportunity to explore more of this amazing city on your own. Or, you can decide to visit the impressive Regensburg Christmas market, including the ones hosted by Thurn and Taxis Palace. Day 6 Nuremberg
While it’s true that approximately 90% of Nuremberg’s historic Old Town suffered extreme damage during the bombings of WWII, much of this fascinating city has been restored to the glory it once knew as the unofficial capital of the ancient Holy Roman Empire. You’ll choose from a popular included GUIDED SIGHTSEEING TOUR and marvel at the city’s imposing medieval fortifications, stunning gothic churches, and majestic Kaiserburg (Imperial Castle), or you can choose to join a wonderful NUREMBERG RALLY GROUNDS tour. During his holiday season the Old Town is illuminated with thousands of colorful festive lights, and the bustling Christmas market, one of the largest in Germany, features some 200 stalls where friendly merchants are selling traditional handcrafted wares and fantastic foods. Day 7 Nuremberg (Disembarkation)–Prague, Czech Republic
After a wonderful breakfast, you’ll say goodbye to your faithful riverboat crew and enjoy a relaxing motor coach ride to beautiful Prague, known as the “Golden City.” (Breakfast)
Day 8 Prague
Charming Prague is a 1,200-year-old city preserved in time. You’ll see its amazing Astronomical Clock, built in 1410 and once considered the envy of all of Europe; picturesque HRADČANY CASTLE GROUNDS; elegant St. Vitus Cathedral; and the iconic Charles Bridge, the oldest bridge in Prague. You’ll have time to browse the Christmas market’s brightly decorated wooden huts, where merchants sell festive Christmas ornaments and colorful decorations, finely handcrafted wooden toys, and other amazing Czech crafts. You’ll get a little inner warmth with a cup of tasty svarene vino (hot mulled wine) and a delicious traditional hot sausage. The beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the Old Town makes an impressive sight during the holidays. (Breakfast)
Day 9 Prague
