River Cruise Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Frankfurt Germany (Embarkation)
Herzlich willkommen (welcome, in German)! This afternoon, board your ship and meet up with your crew for an evening welcoming reception. Just be on board your vessel by 5pm before you sail out of Frankfurt and begain your Europe river cruise.river cruise avalon budapest

Day 2 – Miltenberg
Your day will begin with a guided tour through the charming Bavarian village of Miltenburg. You first begin with a tour through the marketplace, then make your way around the cobblestone lanes and Merchant Hall. Here you will see some of Germany‘s small town medieval structures, towering gates, and its 16th and 17th century timber-framed houses. You will learn about the history behind these treasured homes and how they were transported from medieval times to Miltenburg. You may want to visit the Gasthaus Zum Riesen, also know as the Tavern for Giants, as it is said to be the oldest guesthouse in Germany. If you get a chance to read the Giants Guestbook, you will see famous historical guests such as Barbossa and King Ludwig of Bavaria. Even 2Oth century celebrities such as Elvis Presely are said to have once graced to the floors of this giant home. Take another tour through the Old Town Hall and the town museum. Later you will continue your cruise along the Main River where you will be lead to Wurzburg. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3 – Wurzburg
Chirstmas will not be the same when you visit Wurzburg at Christmas time. Join the festivities that take place in the marketplace. Here you will see facinating artwork from various local artisit as well as arts & crafts at the Arists‘ Christmas Showcase event. river cruises avalon budapestJoin the guided tours through town to view the spectacular 15th century Old Main Bridge, the Mainbrucke and Fortress Marienberg that sits high above the town. The guded tour will take you through the  baroque Bishop’s Residenz which showcases a brillant ceiling fresco, which is the largest ever painted. Your afternoon will end with much-needed time to explore on your own, or you may join an optional exursion around Rothenburg. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4 – Bamberg
Today you will embark on an adventure through the Medieval town, Bamburg, also known as UNESCO World Heritage Site. This guided sightseeing tour will give you a detailed historical view into the Romanesque Cathedral and spectacuar sights of the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall). This beautiful quaint place was built on an island in the middle of the Regnitz River. The entire town is covered in Christmas charm. From flashing lights to sing-song patrons and nativity scenes, you’re nothing short of Christmas cheer. The Christmas market offers traditional items that are native to the town. You will find delicous nut breads and Chritsmas beverages that will open your senses. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5 – Nuremberg
This historic town is another one of Bavaria‘s medieval treasures. Aside from its ties with WWll, its story-book feel with red-roof buidlings and gothic castles are a popular attribute to the city’s structue. A guided sightseeing tour will take you through the historic rennessaince churhces and fotifications that bring this little city to life. Nurembrerg Rally Grounds tour will take you through an extensive tour of Kaiserburg, the imperial castle. Again, the Christmas market is adorned with festive lights and decorations, where Nuremberg’s special and traditional Christmas baked goods and treats are available to enjoy. Day 6 –Nuremberg- Exersion to Munich
After a light breakfast this morning, you will drive out to Munich, where you will experience the sights and captivating atmosphere of the Bavarain capital. The famous Olympic Stadium stands a hieght of 1,000 feet in the Nymphenburg Palace and known for its Oktober festival that is celerbrated throughout the world. Discover, Marienplatz, a place that shares the local Christmas favorites such as fresh gingerbreads, alpine Christmas music and roasted chestnuts. You will have some free time to peruse the grounds by yourself but don’t forget to stop by the Hofbrahhaus, a famous and most celerbated beer hall. You will board your ship later that afternoon. Day 7 – Nuremberg
Take Nuremberg by the hand, as you explore the wonders and treasures at your leisure. There is plenty to do and see around Nuremberg. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 8 – Regensburg
Today you will sail up the Danube River to Regensburg, paying close attention to its 11th and 13th century architecture. This magical Bavarian city is just southest of Germany and is rich with medieval history. You will have the chance to discover quite a few of the 1,300 buildings of ‘‘historic interest‘‘. Take a guided walk through Old Town Hall, built in the 13th century. Then explore Porta Pretoria, the gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD. The Historiche Wurstkuche or Old Sausage Kitchen,  is one one Germany‘s oldest resturants, and offers authentic German beer and an included snack. Why not take a solo journey down the streets to view the remarkable mansions with loft towers that scrape the sky. Partake in a glass or two of mulled wine and roasted almonds as you stroll through the Christmas market. Before you board your vessel for dinner, we will introduce some famous German wines. Day 9 – Passau
You will dock in Passau this morning. Passau is nesteled where the Ilz, Inn, and Danube River conjoin, and is well known for it’s cobblestone streets and patrician houses. The mastermind behind the Italian baroque architecture, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, houses one of the largesr church organs of 17,774 pipes. You have the choice of taking a full guided tour or an excursion to Salzburg to view the famous Sound of Music sites. Learn the Austrian traditions of Christmas while discovering some interesting history about the Christmas Carol, Silent Night. Late afternoon, you will board your vessel. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)


Day 10 – Melk, Austria –Vienna
This morning you have a serene breakfast while enjoing a peaceful excursion across the Danube River on your way to Melk, Austria. Through a guided tour, you will discover Europe‘s largest 11th century monastary, Benedict Abbey, home of over 80,000 printed books and 2,000 manuscripts. Inside this baroque beauty lies a plethora of marble staues, a breathtaking fresco ceiling, and a 210-foot high cupola. Take a walk out on the balcony where the Abbey overooks a picturesque valley.
You will then cruise through Wachau Valley to UNESCO, World Heritgage Site, which will take you to Durnstein, and to the Stiftskirche, a 10th and 11th century Romanesque famous church. Durnstein is called the “City of Music“ because of its direct inspiration to famous composers as Mozart, Strauss and Beethoven. You may attend the optional concert that is avialable that night. Day 11 –Vienna
This guided sightingseeing tour will introduce you to Vienna Opera House, a neo-reniessance treasure, that holds such awe-inspiring musical influences as Lipizzaner and the Vienna Boy’s chior, located inside the famous and extravant Hofburg Imperial Palace. Next on the list is St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the mother of the Roman Catholic Church Archdiocese of Vienna. This gothic and romanesque building echoes historic events and weddings held by notable figures in Austrian history, plus other facisnating sites that you will be intorduced to while on this incredible tour. Late in the afternoon, you will have the chance to drop by one of the Vienna‘s classic coffee houses for a taste of their traditional treats, the Sachertorte and the Apfelstrudel. This will surely bring the festive holiday spirit to life. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 12 – Budapest, Hungry

As you approach the banks of the Danube, you will reach one of Eastern Europes livliest cties, Budapest. Tour the small antique shops for historical treasures such as Herend porcelain, or handcrafted embroidery. Afterward, relax in one of the Gerbeaud Cafe for an authentic coffee paired with their rich cream cake. You will not want to miss this city‘s eight bridges, a famous attraction that connects ancient Buda on the right with Pest on the left. Take a stroll over the Chain Bridge, which was built in 1849 and is an historical symbol of Budapest. Vorosmarty is lively with the Christmas cheer, as you head to this festive local market to grab some last minute gifts, enjoy a glass of their mulled wine, soak in the comforting aroma of fir, and relax in the cozy, evocative ambiance that follows at dusk.
