Choosing Cruise Ship Rooms: What is a GTY Cabin?

what is a gty cabin

Assigned Staterooms

When you book an assigned stateroom, you choose your cabin from the ship’s deck plan. You can expect to pay more for this cabin, but for many people, the difference in price is more than worth the conveniences it provides. They can choose the room that is on the side of the ship they prefer, the deck they want, or where they can choose rooms close to those belonging to other members of their family or group.

Assigned staterooms are about personal preference which can include a number of factors. You may want a room near the elevators or you may prefer upper decks to avoid stairs and elevator use as often. Assigned staterooms are the perfect choice for many people because they know they will get the exact room they choose.

Happy Traveler Comment
I want to thank you [Glynna] for suggesting the Avalon boat trip through the Rhine River. We had a superb time. As I reflect back I am in awe of the history in Europe. The architecture is stunning. I would recommend the trip to all that inquire about it. The finale of a week in Holland was the icing on the cake. Did I say we had a WONDERFUL time? Thank you so much. — Sharon F.

GTY Savings

When you select a GTY cabin, you know you are getting the lowest fare for the category of room selected. You also know there is a possibility you might get an upgrade, although that is not a good reason to choose this option. The main reason for choosing a GTY room is to save money. It’s the best value if you don’t plan to spend much time in your room.

If you intend to spend most of your time onboard enjoying the activities, entertainment, casino, lounges, the deck, swimming pools, restaurants, and shopping, a GTY cabin is your best option for a great room at the lowest price. If you plan to spend as many hours as possible exploring all the ports-of-call and only use your room for sleeping and showering, that’s another reason to book a GTY cabin.
