The best restaurants to visit while in Bar Harbor, Maine on a Canada & New England cruise

Thousands of visitors come to the Acadia region of Maine because of its rugged landscape, pleasant summer and fall weather and opportunities for hiking, sailing and rock climbing. Bar Harbor, the area’s busiest town, has plenty of shops and attractions for Canada & New England cruise ship passengers on shore visits. What many people unfamiliar with the town don’t realize, however, is that it has a great dining scene too.

Casual or formal, there is something for everyone. Here are our tips for some of the best restaurants in Bar Harbor, Maine:

Havana

Looking for great Latin food? Havana is the place to go. One of TripAdvisor’s recipients of its Certificate of Excellence, this establishment is located on Main Street, just a short stroll up from the docks. Havana has a sophisticated menu that offers seafood, vegetarian and meat dishes that often change weekly. This restaurant has a more upscale atmosphere, so be sure to change to nicer attire before heading down.

Jordan Pond House

Although technically not in Bar Harbor, visitors interested in diners can take a free shuttle from the village green to this popular restaurant located right in the center of Acadia National Park. Jordan Pond House has been in operation since 1870. To this day, afternoon tea with popovers remains this establishment’s most popular fare. Other top menu items include lobster stew and house made ice cream. For the most relaxing experience, be sure to call ahead of time, as it can be busy here in the afternoon.

Mache Bistro

For better or worse, lobster is often the only option that comes to mind when one considers Maine food, but Mache Bistro may change your mind. This restaurant, housed in a quaint cottage, offers French fare with a Downeast twist. Menu favorites include pumpkin seed-dusted scallops and lobster and Brie flat bread. The restaurant also has a wide selection of specialty cocktails. Mache Bistro is a popular spot, so reservations are a must.

Bar Harbor Beer Works

Bar Harbor Beer Works bills itself as an all-American bar and grill. If you want some familiar foods, come here for the restaurant’s burgers, pasta dishes and, of course, fresh Maine lobster. (Their lobster cakes are pictured above. Yum!!) This establishment is great for families with children and large groups. In addition to great food, you’ll find rare single malt scotch, cigars and micro-brews here. Upstairs is Carmen Veranda, a related food spot that also has live music, billiards and dancing.
