Enjoy Nature: Waterfalls, flora, beaches, and so much more! If you are in Hilo the waterfalls are a must see! Many of the waterfalls on the big island can been seen from the Hilo coastline but if you are a waterfall fan there are plenty of them in Hilo to explore. Rainbow falls is a great place to start and offers stairs that will lead you to the top of the waterfall for a unique look at this natural wonder. There is also a wheelchair accessible path along the way that offers great views. Another fabulous waterfall destination is in the Akaka Falls State Park. Here you will find both the Akaka and Kahuna Falls, a short path leads you to fantastic viewing spots of both. Other popular waterfalls in the area include Pe’epe’e Falls, Wai’ale Falls, Kulaniapia Falls, Umauma Falls, and Nanue Falls, just to name a few.

Speaking of waterfalls, nature, and beauty there are some smaller waterfalls inside the Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Garden. Here you will find beautiful and amazing plant life flourishing in its natural habitat. There are over 2,000 species of flora and some of the most beautiful orchids I have ever seen! The Onomea Falls are located on this site too. Although the Onomea Falls are not as large as many of the waterfalls on the island it’s still a beautiful site and a two for one special because you have the opportunity to discover the tropical gardens as well!

You don’t have to travel far to enjoy the nature in Hilo. Just walking along the beaches is a treat! Carlsmith, Onekahakaha, and Richardson beaches are the most popular in Hilo and have a lifeguard on duty.
