Dear Cesar, Just dropping you a note about our Alaskan cruise. This was Kurt's and my first cruise and we had a great time. Holland America treated us like royalty; we had excellent service. Thank you for all your time and effort in making our cruise an enjoyable vacation. — JoAnn and Kurt W.

Enjoy Nature: Waterfalls, flora, beaches, and so much more! If you are in Hilo the waterfalls are a must see! Many of the waterfalls on the big island can been seen from the Hilo coastline but if you are a waterfall fan there are plenty of them in Hilo to explore. Rainbow falls is a great place to start and offers stairs that will lead you to the top of the waterfall for a unique look at this natural wonder. There is also a wheelchair accessible path along the way that offers great views. Another fabulous waterfall destination is in the Akaka Falls State Park. Here you will find both the Akaka and Kahuna Falls, a short path leads you to fantastic viewing spots of both. Other popular waterfalls in the area include Pe’epe’e Falls, Wai’ale Falls, Kulaniapia Falls, Umauma Falls, and Nanue Falls, just to name a few.

Speaking of waterfalls, nature, and beauty there are some smaller waterfalls inside the Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Garden. Here you will find beautiful and amazing plant life flourishing in its natural habitat. There are over 2,000 species of flora and some of the most beautiful orchids I have ever seen! The Onomea Falls are located on this site too. Although the Onomea Falls are not as large as many of the waterfalls on the island it’s still a beautiful site and a two for one special because you have the opportunity to discover the tropical gardens as well!

You don’t have to travel far to enjoy the nature in Hilo. Just walking along the beaches is a treat! Carlsmith, Onekahakaha, and Richardson beaches are the most popular in Hilo and have a lifeguard on duty.

Local Culture: As I mentioned before Hilo is not as touristy as other parts of the island, which gives you the perfect opportunity to get to know the locals and enjoy the Hawaiian culture. A cruise to Hilo just isn’t complete without exploring the local history. A fabulous place to start would be the Lyman House Memorial Museum. Once a mission house built by the Lyman’s in 1839, this restored mission house also includes the Lyman museum which is on the State and National Registers of Historical Places and a great way to explore some of Hawaii’s rich culture and history.

Additional spots to visit if you are interested in Hawaiian history are the East Hawaii Cultural Center and the Pacific Tsunami Museum. At the East Hawaii Cultural Center, also known as the EHCC, you can take part in special events, check out some amazing art, or just learn about some of Hawaii’s culture. At the Pacific Tsunami Museum you can hear some stories and check out some exhibits surrounding the Tsunami of 1946.

Want to get to know the Hawaiian culture up close and personal with the locals? Check out the Hilo’s Farmers Market. Here you will find over 200 vendors selling local produce, handmade Hawaiian crafts, and some of the best authentic Hawaiian food you can find!  If you are a foodie the Hilo Farmers Market is a must! The best part, it’s open year around from Wednesday through Sunday!
