As the Black Death (bubonic plague) carved its deadly path through Germany, the residents of the medieval village of Oberammergau began to experience its horror. By 1633, nearly every family had lost loved ones. It was then that the people of the village made a vow to God. They vowed that every ten years they would perform a Passion Play depicting the suffering and death of Christ if they would be spared from more plague deaths. It would be performed at the cemetery where the victims of the terrible pestilence were buried.
After the vow was made, not another person died from the plague and those already infected by the deadly disease recovered. The people of Oberammergau kept their pledge to God, and the first play was performed at the cemetery in 1634.
Passion Play 2020
Today the village inhabitants continue to keep their pledge. The Passion Play is performed in years ending with a zero, which means 2020 is the next opportunity to observe this amazing display of love and loyalty to the vow made over 385 years ago. The 42nd Passion Play will take place in Oberammergau from May 16 through October 4, 2020. All performers must be residents of the village, and 1,830 applied to participate in the upcoming 2020 Passion Play. Hundreds of thousands of people from all around the world make the trip to Oberammergau every ten years to immerse themselves in the play and medieval culture.
