Anchorage’s best breakfast spots to visit on your Alaska cruisetour

Depending on what you choose to do during your Alaskan cruise tour, you could have a very physically-demanding vacation. Hiking, fishing and even panning for gold can take a lot out of you, so it’s important that you start your day right. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day—especially when you’ll be spending the morning and afternoon exploring all of The Last Frontier.

Many Alaskan cruises make a stop in Anchorage, the state’s largest city. If you happen to be there in the morning, you’re in for a treat. Anchorage has some of the best breakfast spots in the state. Here are a few of our top picks, from your friends at CruiseExperts.com:

Cafe Amsterdam

If you show up at Cafe Amsterdam after 10 a.m., be prepared to wait a while for a table. This popular spot is cozy, and when customers arrive, they tend to spend a long time here. The restaurant’s Belgian waffles are one of the most popular menu items. They’re fluffy, light and topped with fresh berries and hot maple syrup. If you’re looking for something a bit fancier, try Cafe Amsterdam’s version of Eggs Benedict. The Croissant Beatrix consists of two poached eggs on a croissant with avocado and tomato, topped with hollandaise sauce.

Don’t forget the coffee! It’s strong and freshly ground. You’ll want to keep sipping on it for hours.

Middle Way Cafe

For almost 20 years, Middle Way Cafe has been a leader in the organic and locally-sourced movement. The restaurant has plenty of vegan/ vegetarian choices as well as gluten-free options. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxing, and you may find yourself wanting to stay here all day. No matter what you decide to eat, be sure to order some coffee to go with it. All of the restaurants are organic, sustainably-obtained and roasted by master roasters from K Bay Caffe in the nearby village of Homer.

Snow City Cafe

For over a decade, Snow City has been voted as the home of the “Best Breakfast” in Anchorage by the readers of the Anchorage Press. The restaurant’s mission is to use as many fresh and locally-sourced ingredients that they can. Everything is made from scratch and there is a variety of vegan, gluten-free and low-fat options.

Vacation is the time to try something new, so instead of eating your usual breakfast of eggs and bacon, try one of Snow City’s eclectic offerings. The cafe’s granola served with dried fruit, honey and nuts is a popular menu item among locals and tourists. Get here early, because tables fill quickly! And, if you don’t want to wait for a table, you can call ahead and make a reservation. (Featured photo of Country Benedict courtesy of Snow City Cafe.)
