Best Way to Visit Pearl Harbor on a Hawaiian Cruise

Visit Hawaii on a Memorial Day Cruise 2016

This month we celebrate Patriot Day, observed as the National Day of Service and Remembrance in the United States.  We highly recommend a visit to Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Oahu, from one of our popular Hawaiian cruises.  The site—which includes the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Bowfin Submarine and USS Missouri “Mighty Mo” Battleship—pays tribute to the 1,777 men who died on Dec. 7, 1941.  We’ve assembled some great tips to make your visit smooth and memorable.

Know Before You Go

Arriving early to snag tickets for the shuttle boat is the most important thing to know!  The tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial are free for the 2,000 first-come, first-served visitors.  During busy times, tickets may run out before noon. Oahu shore excursions (through your ship) will plan accordingly (and will ensure you have a spot) and so should you if you’re visiting Pearl Harbor on your own.  You can also try well-in-advance reservations online at www.recreation.gov and you may specify your tour time.

Leave your heavy baggage behind. The official site says no purses, handbags, fanny packs, backpacks, camera bags, diaper bags, luggage and anything you carry that conceals belongings. Cameras, cell phones and wallets are welcomed—you just can’t put them into a bag.  If you can’t resist sporting that great Hilo Hatties bag, there is a storage facility operated by the memorial for a charge of $3 per bag. Strollers may be parked at the theaters but are not allowed on shuttle boats.

We know it’s also hard to part with that outrageous tee-shirt you purchased in Waikiki, but remember that Pearl Harbor is a place of honor, respect and quiet reflection.  Be mindful with what you choose to wear and how you conduct yourself on site.

It’s no buffet like you’re used to at sea, but the park does have concessions. Outside food and drink is permitted, but only bottled water is allowed on the tour.

Mind your minutes! If you are one of the lucky to score a ticket, you may have to wait a few hours before your tour even starts (but you’re in Hawaii, so chill). The tour itself runs about 75 minutes and includes a 25-minute film and boat trip to the actual memorial. On the back end, allow ample time for exiting the site, transportation and the ship embarkation process.

In addition to Pearl Harbor, Oahu offers up many great shore excursions as do the other ports included with our Hawaiian cruises.
