Cruise to Cozumel: 5 Things to Know

Cruise to Cozumel

Cruise to Cozumel

Travelling to Cozumel on your cruise? Here’s everything you need to know!

Cozumel is one of the most popular cruise destinations in West Caribbean, known for its laid-back vibe and friendly people. The island paradise plays host to thousands of visitors every day, and is set up with enough different activities, attractions, and natural features that you are sure to find something for every member of your party to enjoy. To help you get the most from your cruise to Cozumel, here are some top tips and important facts that we’ve picked up on our travels to the sunny isle.

1. Currency

The Mexican peso is the official currency of Cozumel. Some upscale shops accept credit cards, but you will need cash for many of the merchants and tips. The local shops will accept US dollars or pesos, however the merchants’ exchange rates are notoriously bad so paying in pesos is recommended if you will be making any large purchases. We found that drawing money from a bank’s ATM (not the ATMs on the street) yielded the best exchange rates, even after figuring in the bank’s fee for international transactions.

2. Shopping

Cozumel is a shopper’s paradise, with tons of stores selling everything from high-end luxury goods to local handicrafts. There is a large shopping area packed with stores close to the port, but experienced travelers recommend heading to downtown San Miguel for the best deals. Get into the spirit of things and bargain with merchants – you can end up with deep discounts of as much as 50% percent or more!

 3. Transportation

It’s easy to get around on Cozumel. Taxis are readily available, able to take you practically anywhere you want to go on the island for $20 or less. If you want to go the independent route, you can rent a car for the day. Be aware, though, that traffic signs are all in Spanish – trying to guess their meaning may leave you stranded with a towed car!

4. Beaches

Cozumel is home to some of the best beaches in Mexico. The beaches offer activities to suit every cruiser, whether your idea of paradise is lazing in the sun and getting pampered with a massage, splashing with the family at waterpark activities, or getting active going kayaking or sailing. Charges for beach access, food, and basic activities are reasonable, ranging from $14 for basic access to $30 for waterpark access and $55 for unlimited drinks and food. Prices do change according to season, so check before setting out.

5. Things to do

Cozumel is packed with things to do, whether you are interested in lazing around in the sun, shopping, or exploring Cozumel points of interest. Favorite activities include

  • Explore Mayan Ruins – Topping the list of the best Cozumel Mexico excursions are trips to examine the Mayan Ruins. You can easily visit the San Gervasio and Coba ruins which are located on Cozumel, or take the day to see the larger and more impressive ruins at Tulum which are a short ferry ride away.
  • Dive the coral reef – Cozumel is surrounded by the 2nd largest reef system in the world, so there are incredible snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities. Less active cruisers can view the reefs on a glass bottom boat tour.
  • Commune with wildlife – Spend the day communing with wildlife, go swimming with sting rays or dolphins
  • Get active – Soar on a zip-line tour, rent a dune buggy, go horse-back riding, or try wind-sailing
