The Traveler’s Cure for Hard-to-come-by Family Time

Traveling with your whole family can be one of the most rewarding adventures in your life.  In my circle, I don’t know of a single family that complains about spending too much time together.  It’s actually quite the opposite. There is simply not enough time to spend with our families.

Family Vacation

Do you suffer from packed schedulitis?

Think about it. We work, go to school, sometimes work AND go to school, play sports, coach, volunteer, and the list goes on. It’s a pretty busy schedule!

Sure, we see each other and communicate with each other every day, but what are we communicating? Usually it’s the schedules, the “don’t forgets,” the “turn in your homeworks” and the “feed the dogs.” There’s just really not much time for quality family fun and adventure.

Now, think about the grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins. We know we would like to spend more time with them too, but where is the time?

Here comes the guilt. Ugh!

What if there was a cure?

Now picture this: having the WHOLE family coming together for 4, 5, 6, or 7 days once per year, but not at a family member’s house. Who wants to wash dishes, clean the house, or worry about entertainment? Instead, you’re on a cruise and you’re TOGETHER!

Now, I know what’s happening to you right now. You’re thinking: “There’s no way this will work for my family.”

And the list begins:

  • we live too far apart
  • the kids are all different ages
  • my brother and his wife don’t have kids
  • the teenagers they eat too much and everything is boring to them
  • Grandma and Grandpa have to eat early
  • I can’t relax when I have to supervise the kids all day
  • it’s TOO EXPENSIVE.

I dare say that you’re wrong.

My prescription: a family cruise for all

Let’s reconsider what it really could be like: you’re on a cruise together…

  • Your travel agent has picked a port of departure that is central for the whole family – maybe its Los Angeles or New Orleans. Perhaps even Galveston or Miami.
  • Grandma and Grandpa are excited about the senior discount or maybe a military discount they received on their cruise cost.
  • All the adults with children 17 years old and under are grinning ear to ear because their little ones received a reduced price with big perks – all meals are included – breakfast, lunch, snacks, ice cream, pizza, dinner and desert.  They can eat as much as they want and it won’t cost more.
  • The parents of teenagers discover their young adults really can survive without cell phones, and be happy! Instead, the teens are rock climbing, shooting hoops, learning how to surf, and sliding down the waterslide by day while boogying in their own night club by night.
  • The smaller kids are having the time of their lives with Grandma, Grandpa and cousins, sliding down the kids’ slide, and playing on the water toys.
  • Some of the other kids experienced a real scavenger hunt in the afternoon or maybe they learned all about how and why volcanoes erupt.
  • Your brother and his wife are in the adults-only pool area enjoying the soothing music and reading a great book, sipping an adult beverage.

And the fun continues at night:

  • Before dinner the whole family goes to see a character show on ice or an acrobat water show or family friendly comedian.
  • Later, you all come together around one dinner table to talk about the activities of the day. There’s no talk of homework or chores and Grandma and Grandpa look over their family with pride and joy for the blessing of having everyone together.
  • These are moments you will not soon forget.

There’s more to come!

Guess what? This was just day one and you have 5-7 more days to go! What’s more, we haven’t even arrived at one of many amazing ports/countries along your route. You can still look forward to a whole lot of exploring and learning about sea or land creatures, shopping, adventure, zip-lines and more!
