What are the best things to do in Mazatlán on a Mexican Riviera cruise?

Mazatlán, Mexico is a port city on the coast of the spectacular Pacific Ocean just across the water from the tip of Cabo in Baja California. Cruise ship visitors are loving the newly renovated port and the Malecón boardwalk which makes walking this colonial city a top attraction in itself. First, in order to get to Mazatlan, you’ll need to book a Mexican Riviera cruise on Holland America Line, Princess, Norwegian or Azamara.

There’s so much more to do!

Maximize your vacation experience on your Mexican Riviera cruise. CruiseExperts.com picked our favorite things to do in Mazatlán. Between the beach, ocean, forest and old town, you have a lot of choices.

What are the best things to do in Mazatlán during your cruise to Mexico?

1. Take a party barge out to Stone Island. Once you’ve arrived there, expect to be greeted with music, food and drinks. This excursion includes lunch and an open bar serving up cold beer, rum, brandy, soft drinks and juices. The day is yours, so you decide how to spend your time. Horseback riding is popular on this open beach. Most water sport activities are available as well. Stand-up paddle boards, banana boat rides, snorkeling, kayaking or just swim and relax in the sun. Deer Island is another popular island with a great reef for snorkeling.

2. Sport fishing brought in the first tourists and is still a main attraction. You can catch Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Grouper, Snook, Sea Bass, Red Snapper, Permit, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Tuna and Yellowtail. Many of the local restaurants will cook up your catch for you. Visit Fishing Mazatlán’s Facebook page for some amazing pictures of their happy fishermen. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, ask them about “Rodeo Fishing” and swimming with the sharks.

3. Take a guided tour through the Pacifico Brewery. Make sure to sign up for this excursion on your cruise ship. This tour fills up—everyone looks forward to the free samples served on the tour. The brewery tour also includes a trek through the neighborhoods where the brewery founders and their families lived. And afterwards, you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy the beach—boogie boarding, para-sailing, jet skiing, stand up paddle boarding or just relaxing.

4. Head for the hills! Take a zipline canopy tour in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. If you’re new to ziplining, a platform is the start of a zipline ride. So if there are 12 platforms, then you’ll get 12 zipline rides. Each zipline has a spectacular view and is a fun way to see the dessert-style tropical forest. As an added bonus, some tours include a stop at the Los Osuna Blue Agave Distillery on your way back.

5. Visit Old Mazatlán before you head back to your ship. Old Mazatlán is the historic center where you’ll see the Cathedral and find plenty of shops and food vendors. A Pulmonia taxi is a great way to get around this town. It’s basically  an over-sized white golf cart. So grab your favorite drink before you hop on, and ask your driver to drive along the Melécon boardwalk for a relaxing view of the ocean.
