The Best of Anchorage: Top 5 Places to Eat

Planning an Alaskan cruise? As we mentioned in our previous blog, The Best of Anchorage: Top 5 Places to Shop, be sure to consider spending some time in Anchorage. In order to get there, you’ll first need to plan a northbound or southbound cruise from Vancouver to Whittier or Seward, or vice-versa.  Anchorage technically isn’t a port, but you will fly in or out of there if your cruise begins or ends in Whittier or Seward. To stay in Anchorage, you’ll need to add a land tour to your cruise (i.e., a “cruisetour”) or just add a couple days onto your vacation either pre- or post-cruise. There’s plenty to see and do in and around Alaska’s largest city, and we’ve found some great places for you to eat while you’re exploring the area. Depending on what appeals to your palate, here are five places to eat that the locals and visitors rave about.

Top 5 Places to Eat in Anchorage

orso_anchorage_bering_sea_king_crab_legs1. ORSO is “the place to be” in Anchorage. From their menu featuring the freshest items to their impressive wine list, ORSO is recognized as the top place to dine in Anchorage. For a real treat to satisfy a big appetite, try the Bering Sea King Crab legs. It’s served with fresh asparagus, and their special house-smoked salmon stuffed tomato.

glacier_brewhouse_anchorage_bartender2. Glacier BrewHouse is the local’s favorite for fresh Alaskan seafood and hand-crafted ales. It’s received many coveted awards for “best local secrets,” “Big Finds,” by Travelocity and won the gold medal at San Francisco’s Toronado Beer and Barleywine Festival. The Anchorage Bed & Breakfast Association awarded them for the “The Best Customer Service” in 2013. While they have received numerous awards for their smooth and tasty ales, their fresh Alaskan food is equally as good. It’s a win-win meal from start to finish.

3. Sourdough Mining Company has the ambiance of eating in an old goldmine and also has a creekside saloon. The seafood platter received great reviews because of the delicious crab legs, prawns, salmon, halibut nuggets, waffle fries and corn. They’re famous for their “Korn” fritters and whipped honey butter. If you still have room for more after your meal, head over to the build-your-own sundae bar. Each night there’s a fun storytelling show called “The Adventures of Dusty Sourdough.”

humpys_anchorage4. Humpy’s Great Alaskan Ale House has something for everyone. It claims to serve up the best Alaskan Red King Crab in the world. Make new friends with the locals on their outdoor patio while enjoying a tasty ale. And hang around for live music from local musicians.

wheel_good_food_anchorage_truck5. Wheel Good Food is a bright orange mobile culinary kitchen. The truck has a full-service kitchen including the “Vault” which is the on board half-ton smoker. Breakfast and lunch specialties include fresh-baked goods, soups and sliders—salmon, pulled port, beef brisket chicken and vegetarian. So grab your food and enjoy a picnic-style breakfast or lunch in the fresh Alaskan air. Since they’re mobile, you can find out where they’re parked on their Wheel Good Food Facebook page.
