Diving & Snorkeling: Cozumel is probably most famous for the diving and snorkeling available off their shores in the Caribbean Sea. In fact, it is said that drift diving was practically invented in Cozumel, and for those of us who do not want to exert a lot of energy while diving, drift diving is the way to go. The current in Cozumel is next to perfect, allowing clear and clean water as you explore the impressive Columbia and Palancar coral reefs off the Cozumel Island. The scuba diving and snorkeling excursions are limitless but if you are looking for something in particular it’s best to book your excursions early.

Mayan Ruins: If you are taking a cruise to Cozumel, the Mayan Ruins are a must see! Your guide will explain all that we have discovered about the Mayan culture, its civilization, and mysteries. Two of the more popular excursions available are San Gervasio, the largest Mayan site in Cozumel, which was once holy grounds for the Mayan people. It is said almost every Mayan female would travel to this site at least once in her lifetime to give sacrifice to the goddess of fertility, Ixchel. Another very popular site is the Tulum Ruins which is located near Cozumel and accessible by ferry. Although a little farther to get to the Tulum Ruins excursions are available for cruisers on a time frame. The Tulum ruins are much larger and more impressive than any of the ruins in Cozumel and worth the journey in my opinion. It is one of the most preserved of the areas ruins and once served as a fortress against enemy attacks.
Museo de la Isla de Cozumel: If you enjoy history as much as I do take a stroll through the Cozumel museum. Here you will see amazing Mayan and Spanish artifacts and learn about the rich history surrounding this amazing island. The museum is located very close to the cruise port and in the heart of San Miguel. After you explore the museum you can enjoy the rest of the day taking in the local culture with some authentic Mexican cuisine and local shopping.
